Welcome to the Diabetes Forum, Mattie8_9. Yes, I'm sure this is not the kind of news you were expecting or wanting. It's not that unusual to be diagnosed at your age though. Here is a link to the Mayo Clinic for more information:
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/type-1-diabetes/DS00329Nowadays there's a lot of information on the Internet so I'm sure you'll be busy looking around. I would highly suggest that you buy Diabetes Solutions by Dr. Richard Bernstein. He is a medical doctor who is a type 1 himself and his book had more information about diabetes than I've read anywhere else.
Your doctor should also be an important source of help, of course. Are you on insulin shots? How were you diagnosed? What were your blood sugar readings?
Please read the stickies at the top of our forum here for some more information. There are a few type 1s here and I hope they come and post some support for you.
Ask all the questions you have and we'll all try to help you on this road. I'm glad you found us!
