Hi again. I'm glad the blood pressure has come down to normal. High blood pressure as well as diabetes can harm the kidneys (and the heart), so the doctors want to make sure this is all in normal parameters.
Hydrocholorothiazide is a diuretic and she needs to be careful of her potassium levels, so she needs to include this important mineral in her diet. Bananas are a good source but they can also raise her blood sugar if she eats a lot, so she needs to be careful. The other side effect of this is higher blood sugar.
Cutting down on carbohydrates will help her control her blood sugar, so I think she should not overdo the bread, potatoes, rice or pasta.
If she is able, walking or some sort of sustained activity is very very useful for her diabetes and blood pressure. Swimming, biking, walking, etc. would all help.
I'm sure this is worrisome but with some changes in diet and lifestyle along with the medication, your mom should be on the road to better health. Please keep us updated!
