Hi Folks, I thought I would just pop in and ask a question. Last year I had a colonoscopy and for my prep I used Gatorade, which worked well.
However, I am now prediabetic, my hands shake quite badly if I am late eating, and I am therefore just a little concerned as next week I am having another colonoscopy and endoscopy and I plan on using the Gatorade again. My prep begins on Tuesday with just taking water, tea, soups, jelly, apple juice, melon juice and then continues into Wednesday when I start to take the Gatorade with a laxative in the afternoon. I know its not going to be easy, but I am a little worried now as I don't want to have the problem with my hands shaking, and will the Gatorade me okay for me now that I am prediabetic?
What are your thoughts please?

Hi Poppie. I think there is a sugar-free Gatorade, isn't there? That will have much less impact on your blood sugar than the apple and melon juices certainly! Fruit juices are high in sugar, even if it's natural sugar.

I will look for the sugar free Gatorade, maybe I can have a mix of some sugar free and normal, because without that bit of sugar from the normal I am worried I might be shaking, as I literally have to stop eating normal food Monday dinner time, and go onto liquids on Tuesday, my procedure is on Thursday morning.

Have you checked your blood sugar when you've had those shaking feelings? I wonder what's going on with that...
Something else you might try is one of those liquid meal-replacements but make sure you check out the carb content. There are some in the diet and diabetes aisles of the supermarkets. You could maybe drink half a can for breakfast and the other half at night, gelatin and juices in between time. Maybe you could have a vanilla one? I'm not sure about
the chocolate because of the color but if you have it on Monday or Tuesday, it might work.
Good luck with everything! I understand it's hard to balance different health issues.

Lanie, I bought a couple of those liquid meal replacements yesterday, and some gelatin too, so hopefully that will help...thanks a lot.

That's great. All that along with some broth, I think you'll do fine. Good luck!

I suggest vegetable or chicken broth. I had a colonoscopy last year and the broth had 1-3 carbs depending on the kind you get. Watch out for "sugar-free" popsicles because they can have carbs in them, which doesn't make any sense, I know. I had lots of "Sprite Zero" because it had no carbs.
Good luck with your procedure!

Lanie, I start the prep tomorrow, a full day of just liquids, and then on Wednesday the same until around 2pm when I have to start taking the stuff that will keep me in the bathroom for the rest of the day, luckily my procedure is on Thursday and its early, 6.30 am, so I wont have the whole day to get through, thank you for asking.

Oh my goodness, I got you on a fast track!
So, I hope tomorrow is ok, and that Wednesday goes well. I was able to get through the liquids-only day fine, but I really had trouble with the stuff that cleans everything out. That was really hard for me.

It wasn't TOO bad, especially if you prepare yourself well. For example, I got these moistened Cottonelle wipes that are gentle on you after you've had a bathroom break. Just be patient with yourself, you can't help it when you have to go. Best of luck to you!

Hi Lanie, Thank you for asking...Well, it went fine, I was quite brave on the day and just marched in there with a resigned feeling of just wanting to get it over with. I woke up feeling okay, my results were good too, and so I can't complain really, apart from feeling a bit out of sorts with myself, which I am sure will pass, because today I feel a bit better.

Good. I'm glad you got through it! The only thing you can do is to put one foot in front of the other, and now it's over. I hope it gets easier with time.

Don't forget to remind yourself of how brave you were the next time you have a colonoscopy. It sounds like you have at least one a year, so for next time... be brave again!
