Hopefully new labeling will make more people aware of what is really in the packages. If you aren't reading food labels, you need to, not only for diabetes but in general.
Actually, rather than rely on food that comes in packages that need labels, try eating more natural food and not from packages. Well, sometimes you can't help it. Like peanut butter in jars. I think we can call that processed food because it's not in its natural state but read the labels of peanut butter and you will find some have added sugar and/or salt. If you want to eat peanut butter or any nut butter, don't buy it with added sugar!
Spaghetti sauce or any tomato sauce in jars is another trap. Nine times out of ten you will find sugar or some form of it added. Make your own for heaven's sakes! Tomato sauce, oregano, basil, garlic, onion some olive oil and other herbs like rosemary or sage if you want it herby.
I went to that website "Natural News" and was struck by the ads for detox and others of questionable worth. Although the article may have pointed out some interesting things, it seems many of them are quasi facts and just plain wrong. Reader beware. For example, I copied this from that article: Brown sugar is a gimmick -- it's just white sugar with brown coloring and flavoring added. This is ignorant. Brown sugar is sugar mixed with molasses. Molasses is a syrup made from sugar during the refining process. There's nothing artificial about brown sugar other than the fact that sugar is processed sugar cane or beets. So, basically, I would not believe what I read on that website as it's full of misinformation and lots of ads to buy into detoxing, etc.
Be cautious when you read about "natural" anything.
