Hi Twiggy,
Low blood pressure does not cause Hypoglycemia. The fact that you may have Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) is totally unrelated.
Typically, the body’s biochemical response to hypoglycemia usually starts when sugars are in the high/mid 60’s. At this point, the liver releases its stores and certain hormones start to activate. In many people, this process occurs without any clinical symptoms. You really need to take some blood sugar readings to assess whether you are falling into the hypoglycemic range.
While there is some degree of variability among people, most will usually develop symptoms suggestive of hypoglycemia when blood glucose levels are lowered to the mid 50’s. The first set of symptoms are called neuro-genic (or sympathetic) because they relate to the nervous system’s response to hypoglycemia. You may experience any of the following;
- nervousness,
- sweating,
- intense hunger,
- trembling,
- weakness,
- palpitations, and
- often have trouble speaking.
In most people, these symptoms are easily recognizable and the vast majority of people with diabetes only experience this degree of hypoglycemia if they are on medications or insulin. Diabetics with high circulating levels of insulin who fast or lower their carbohydrate intake drastically should also watch for this. Mood changes, sleep disorders and headaches are usually associated with severe Hypoglycemia.
Take some blood glucose readings and know for sure, otherwise you are simply guessing and this does neither your doctor nor yourself any good at diagnosing your condition. Hope this helps
