91 year old Mother

Need some info –

My mother, who is 91 years old, thinks she is having problems with her blood sugar.   When she has her blood work done, the doctor tells her that she is borderline diabetic and that she should just watch what she is eating.  She lives in a high-rise with other senior citizens and, of course, they all talk about their aches and pains.  She was having problems with dizziness last Fall and was sure it was her blood-sugar.  As it turned out, it was her thyroid and once they changed her medication she was ok.  Now, she is starting to have problems again.  She says she wakes up in the morning dizzy and very hungry.  Is that a symptom of Diabetes?  She eats 5 or 6 small means a day – just not a big eater anymore so waking up hungry makes sense.

Yes, she was tested last month and they feel like they have her Thyroid back up to where is should be.  I have mentioned to her that maybe some carbs and protein before bed – crackers and cheese, oatmeal, peanut butter sandwich, etc.  I also got her a little book that she can start writing down everything she eats.  We got her a blood sugar monitor but she is having problems using it.  She has arthritis in her hands and sometimes just can’t get them to function the way she wants.  I’m going to try and start working with her to use it – have it ready for her and then we can monitor what her levels are. 

I have been reading about diabetes, but just had not seen anything about dizziness and hunger first thing in the morning.  Thought maybe someone else had experienced this.  She really doesn’t have any of the other symptoms.
