Hello everyone, i am a wifeof a type 1 diabetic. he is 42 years old and has just been diagonsed about 1 1/2yrs ago with the type 1 diabetes. since then he has had dizzy spells. they started off not to may at a time. he would feel real dizzy and basically fall to the ground. we checked his sugars when it happend it was not low. his numbers usually run high, 498 or below. he still does not have them under control. he is on the fast acting inslulin during the day and the 24 hour one at night.  he is not a good patient. does not like to take his shots  or eat when he is supposed to . my concern at this time  is this dizzy thing happening. dr told him it could be from the diabetes. i could see this happening when he is on a low. he has been getting alot more of these dizzy spells. not sure if it is from the diabetes. has anyone heard of this or have this symptom? you should probably check with your doctor.  I would be worried about Pre-stroke symptoms.  Have a doctor check his blood pressure on both arms, in both a sitting and standing position as well as the pulse in the carotid artery.  Check his ears as well.  If you can rule out circulation problems, you've rulled out the most serious and immediate malady caused by uncontrolled sugar.  But don't wait, do this right away.  Hope this helps.

Hi there....blood sugars running that high will most definitely cause dizzy spells. Just before I was DX a Type1, when my sugars were running as high as you hubby's, I often had my world spinning. Not good. Neither are those blood sugar numbers.

You can lead a horse to water but.........you know the rest :-) Hubby HAS to take control of those outta control sugars if he doesn't want to seriously pay for it (yes, complications WILL occur if he doesn't get them controlled and soon. Stroke no necessarily being the worst of them.

As Warren suggested, get a few things checked out to rule out potential risks of other non-Diabetes related things. Might want to let him know, too, that if he ends up in emergency because of low or high blood sugars and he is a diagnosed Type1 Diabetic, the emergency doc has to report it. He could have his driver's licence taken away. That could still happen if his doctors don't believe he is being compliant with his diet and insulin regimen. Not fun.

Hi Warren and Phishbowl, thank you so much for your thoughts and advice. i really do appreciate it. He has had blood pressure taken it was normal a few times, then a little high but not to bad, said the dr. Are you saying these dizzy spells can be a sign of a stroke? how do you get checked for this. what type of dr should he see. the doc he sees is a regular nurse practicenor and a diabetic specialist. should he see a cardilologist. i keep telling him he should have his heart tested and all that other stuff related to heart. He also gets alot of sweating spells. is that part of diabetes? he gets that before the dizzy spells.its like a cold sweat. he really needs to get the numbers under control, and to eat and take the shots at the same time of the day. Correct???? he does not do that. i can not controll what he does, only can tell him. like you said phisbowl, he needs to control this himself. The ears, can that cause dizziness, is that from the diabetes. does diabetes affect your ears also? thank you so much again. i hope the two of you are under control of your diabetes. i know it is a very difficult thing to deal with. Sweating was also a symptom I experienced often with high numbers...or...they could've been lows. The only way to know what's happening in your body is to (finger) test.

Not sure if it's related to Diabetes (don't think so) but, I experienced vertigo for a period of time that has also been recurring every so many years. Was told it was an inner-ear viral thing that was best left to sort itself out in time. The first time I got it I woke up falling out of bed and the rest of the day was like I'd just downed a 26er of alcohol. Sooo not fun.

The best I could suggest would be to make an appointment with your GP, explain the circumstances, and (if warrented), get those tests done that will address your concerns. Gotta start somewhere. Good luck :-)

I really dont know how to post on here soo Im just going to do this & hope to get replies back. I havent been to the doctor but lately I have been not eating right because Im rarely hungry and I get dizzy, light headed, weak, sick to my stomach, and headaches. I was just wondering if that is any sign of low blood sugar or any of the sort? Please reply!! Thanks!!

Hi Tosha, from what you're saying it might be low blood sugar but it could be other conditions as well.  You need to see your doctor so they can run tests.   There are several things to be concerned about like blood sugar levels, high or low blood pressure, pregnancy, migraines and so on.  (In some countries, those symptoms could be malaria.)  So, make sure you see your doctor as soon as possible and in the meantime, eat small quantities of food if you can keep it down (like chicken soup and crackers, tea) and don't drive!  Hope you feel better.
