Has anyone heard of this supplement? Does anyone take it?

Hi Ruth,

I read around the internet for a bit. Found articles claiming how new and wonderful it is dated Sept 05. Seems it's been in Europe since the mid '50's...that's 1950!...lol

Not sure that it's all it's cracked up to be, but guess it can't hurt to try. Everywhere says no side effects. If you can afford it it might help, but I wouldn't look at it as a cure or a way of getting rid of the insulin bottle...except in rare cases.

Just my opinion...

Hello 4sons,  Are there significant medical tests for this product?  I would think that if it were for real than they would get some proof to back it up.

Maybe I am wrong. For instance, as is often the case in natural medicines,  there is no money for studies, OR to defend from all the lawsuits that come from Pharma's trying to eliminate any competition to the snake oils that they pump us with.

LOL. I am in a Hell of mood tonight. Urrrrgh!

A lot of the people who follow Dr. Bernstein's plan take it with good results. It has been widely used in Europe for years. I just wondered if anyone here was familiar with it. This is mostly ALAs and biotin.

Hi Ruth, What's ALAs?  I take biotin capsules.  Biotin is vitamin H.  (I'd previously written a vitamin B but realized I was wrong.)  So, those are the 2 ingredients?

Hey, Lanie ...

I'm probably going to "strangle" this ... but I believe ALA's are alpha lipoic acids. I know Dr. B. is big on them.

I'm trying not to go overboard with this Dr. B. stuff but I feel like I got a diabetes education sitting on the beach off and on this past week. I am sensing a giant shift in how I am thinking about things. I am easily overwhelmed by information so I'm trying to absorb just a little at a time.

Here's what I've got so far. I know I've heard this all here ,.. but it's hitting me differently. Maybe all the great things I read here have allowed me to hear more.

1. STRICT adherence to the 6-12-12 carb thing.
2. Monitor four times a day.
3,.LOTS of exercise NOT at the beginning of the day!
4. Reasonable amounts of water and supplements. No overloads.

I can do those things. Ok. Not LOTS of exercise but definitely 45 minutes per day. I'm going to try and figure out how to do more than run. Weight training needs to be involved. Do you think yoga would could???

Well, I'm still unsure about taking something with ingredients I don't know much about. I looked at the website but the chemical name for that ALA is unknown to me - not that I know a lot anyway! about the weight training, you can use dumbells of different weights and there are exercises you can find on the web for building muscle. All in all, having more muscle is healthy all around. I've never done yoga but it should help you with stress at least!

I think you're on the right lines. God knows we take enough medication, and I for one don't want any more if I can avoid it. Like you, Ruth, I think we can alleviate our condition most effectively with an appropriate diet and regular exercise.
I read Dr B. a couple of years after I'd come to the same basic conclusions myself by trial and error. I was delighted when I found it though because it does help to reassure me when all around are preaching low fat / starchy carbohydrates / statins. They're wrong and we're right!
I'm feeling rightous today after posting a personal best in a 80 mile cycle race on Sunday - another thing the doctors don't think I should be doing. Hah!

Maybe this is getting away from the 'thread' here but ....   Fergusc, why would your doctors think you shouldn't be participating in the race?  Too strenuous?

Good question Lanie!

I don't really understand it either. My problem is that I have hypoglycemia unawareness (maybe this IS another thread?). I've had Type 1 for so long that I have no symptoms when my blood sugars are dropping too low. This can be amusing for others when you walk around the house naked convinced you're the Prime Minister, but less so when you drive your car into a lampost at 40mph. I've done both.

I think the doctors would prefer that I do nothing that carries the risk of hypoglycemia - including running and cycling races. I prefer to believe that these problems mean that I should just try harder, not give up and admit defeat. We may just have to agree to disagree!

Oh! Sorry I forgot you were type 1. Well, then, you do have to be careful of lows, for goodness sakes. What do diabetic athletes do to be sure this doesn't happen to them? Change dosage before activity? Test during the activity? You need to be careful but I'm sure there are ways to participate in sports. I'd read Mr. Universe was arrested for DUI (I think.) this year but it was finally sorted out. He experienced a diabetic low at the time.

I know I need to test regularly - 5 times a day is normal, even more if I'm running or cycling. It takes quite a bit of practice learning how to do it while you're on the move! But it would be mad to NOT keep the exercise going when it has such beneficial effects in reducing insulin doses, keeping the weight off, and maintaining metabolism and muscle mass. I'd rather not think about the alternative.
I know of others who run their blood sugars quite a bit higher just before they race - up to 10mmol/l or 180 mg/dl, but Bernstein is critical about this approach. His advice is to keep the sugars normal and carry glucose tabs to top them up as necessary which is what I try to do.
I raced with a couple of nondiabetic friends on Sunday, one who carried 6, yes 6 bananas in his shirt to keep him fueled up for the 4 hours on the bike! I can't imagine having to eat all that. I imagined he must have looked a bit like King Louie from Jungle Book were he to have coveted man's bicycle rather than his red fire. I messed up by overeating at breakfast and though my sugars were quite a bit higher than my normal levels, it did mean I didn't go low, run out of steam or have to eat at all during the race.
