I obviously know very little about Diabetes, but wondered if anyone could answer a few questions.
I started some symptoms about two weeks ago. I have headaches, foot and leg pain, urine odor (but definitely not sweet smelling – more foul, and has been for months), and vision changes (though could be partly from the headaches or vice versa). My fasting plasma glucose has always been ok (91 just one week ago). I spot check with a meter and my pre-meal glucose is like 87. 2 hours after beginning of meal, I see numbers like 87 – 108, or as high as 118 sometimes.
My Doc dipped my urine and found no sugar abnormalities. She said that even though this doesn't look like Diabetes, that some people are insulin resistant, where the insulin effectively brings the blood glucose down to normal levels (hence the normal test numbers), but the level is not normal at the cellular level. She said the way to check this is to test C Peptide.
Looking on-line, I see other factors considered are trigs > 150 (mine usually are), HDL < 40 (mine is usually not much higher than that).
My questions are:
1. If any of you have experience with Insulin Resistance, do you think there is merit to consider this further? What factors led to your diagnosis?
2. Is it typical for symptoms like this, even though my numbers look good? If the sugar is ok, but there is still a problem, aren't such symptoms from excess sugar in the blood? I don't know if I need to be looking elsewhere or what?
3. Is there a definitive, but simple test, such as C Peptide? I'm self-pay at this point, so I don't mind a simple test I can order on-line, but prefer nothing involved (or expensive).
Thanks in advance.
