Are you on a pump or MDI? Most pumpers I know can program/adjust their basal rate to compensate for that but, if you're like me and on two injections a day of Levemir (long-acting basal insulin).... I may have an idea why you go high.
For me that high period was the gap between my morning shot wearing off and my evening shot not quite kicking in yet. One way I compensate (with the "poor man's pump"), is to always take a shot of Rapid with my evening snack. I do take 5-7 shots of insulin a day but the control is worth it for me.
