I fit the pattern you are mentioning Jeannie. My grandmother on my father's side had diabetes, my father had it beginning in his 50's, and I have been diagnosed at 55 (I'm female ). As for the inherited eating patterns, my grandmother was a Russian immigrant and she lived far from us (I was a child when she died) so I don't really know what they ate, but I would assume they ate a lot more fat and carbs than we do now. My father was a businessman, and he had a lot of business lunches, dinner parties, etc. (which certainly has never been the case for me), although he ate a lot of fruit and vegetables and healthy foods as well. Growing up, we didn't have all the fast food that's around now, and even what was available, we rarely had. We had "home cooked" meals at every meal and we almost never had pizza or hamburgers, etc. My generation (including me) has lived on a lot more fast food. I think the availability of the quick easy drive-thru is a factor for a lot of us.
I always had a tendency to have LOW blood sugar, which "flipped" this April. I think the low fat, high carb diet due to my high cholesterol may have contributed to the "flip" for me, but who knows. The fact is that I have the family history, and my kids need to watch out for that. Luckily, I've found this resource, and have learned to keep my carbs at bay, so I'm hoping to keep improving.
