Hi ceebee, lots of factors can make blood sugar go up or down. Not eating may cause it to go too low but it might begin to rise if your body thinks it's starving. Sometimes eating (and depending on what you eat) will help even out the blood sugar, too. The best approach is to eat something at least even if you're sick, but not loaded with carbs, of course. Sickness and some medications for other health problems can cause the blood sugar to rise, so you need to test. As you should know from reading through our topics here, if you stick to a lower carb diet, smaller meals (maybe with a couple of snacks) during the day, and regular exercise, your blood sugar should be able to stabilize. When you do meet with the nutritionist, be prepared to be given a diet and menus with carbohydrates. Most nutritionists still follow the old ideas of the food pyramid which is grain-based and then expect diabetes meds to cover the carbs. IMHO this doesn't make sense. Personally, I tossed out these papers given to me and created my own diet from reading various information online, in books and here and have found valuable information in Dr. Richard Bernstein's book
The Diabetes Solution. So, the more educated you are about
your health, the better you can help control it. Take care and let us know what's going on.
