Hi,

Does anyone on this board ski with epilepsy? I had my first seizure in 17 years last month (3rd in my life) and am TERRIFIED that I won't be able to participate in my favorite activity. It's not just a hobby, it's my life. The websites and my doctor seem to give the same vague, litigation-safe answer. So has anyone here suffered from epilepsy and still gone out and skied anything steeper than 45 degrees in pitch? Or hit jumps more than 30 feet in length? I can't imagine my life without it. It's not the same being relegated to intermediate runs. I've only gone one weekend since it happened and tried to exercise some cautions. For the time being, I haven't hit any big jumps/cliffs and went with a buddy and a helmet. Any experiences from epileptic skiers would be appreciated.

Hi Rams,

Im really sorry to hear about your predicament. Do you know what triggered the sz? Perhaps if you could work that out and then exclude it from your skiiing you would be ok? 3 sz's in your whole life and 1 in the last 17 years! Thats a great track record. I think it would be wise to start on the intermediate slopes and work your way up. That way, if any part of your skiiing is a trigger, then you will find out about it before your hurtling through the air at 300mph! tongue I cant claim to have skiied myself but would love to try it. (The lack of money and/or passport are a problem atm!) I wouldnt have thought epilepsy would have been a problem. Have you talked to travel agents? The ones that offer insurance should be able to tell you whether you can or not. (Although no doubt, travel insurance would be higher as skiiing is such a dangerous sport)

I'm not a skier but am an avid cyclist. I've ridden all my life. A near fatal bike crash years is what caused my E. I don't recommend having a skull fracture if you have the choice.

I decided 15 years ago that I was going to keep riding. It helps that almost all my szs are nocturnal. I just couldn't deal with sitting at home. I've ridden almost 75k miles and still love it. I do think emotions are an important part of E. Feeling good about yourself and positive about life seem to help control szs (at least for me)

i say u can't let epilepsy or any other disease hold u back if u love to ski and it makes u happy then ski. i think it would be worse for ur health if u stayed in ur house thinking bout skiing and getting no exercise. just have someone go with u and u should be fine on any jump

westcoast-that skull fracutre sentence cracked me up! (no pun intended, lol)

I would say though, if its not putting him in danger or anyone else then it should be fine. And like yall said you can get hurt doing anything. I mean, i was sitting on my front porch one night when i had one and ended up flying off it holding my chair and falling into the yard. And i was just sitting there!

I've had epilepsy all my life , different types. I skied and rode horses in competitions and I had to bow out for about 8 yrs when something happened that made my seizures uncontrollable. But once the docs found another set of meds I resumed skiing and riding and I never found it triggered seizures, in fact in my case I htink the exercise helped me.
