I am the mother of a 20 yr old with tonic/clonic seizures. she was diagnosed at 15. recently she was taken off her depakote and they increased her lamictal (?) she is having seizures now about once a week. does anyone else that takes this med have the same problems? she has had to leave college because of her seizures. she has no aura or warning just boom and she is on the floor.

it is so hard to watch your child have these seizures. just this morning she fell out of bed while having one and hit her face on the bed post.

she is wanting to move out and be on her own... i am having a problem dealing with the fact that i cant protect her 24 - 7 any other moms out there feel this way? whats the best way to let them go?

Hey mom... it is very hard to watch a child go through this... and especially hard to try and let them go (as they wish) when you feel they are not ready... Have you talked to her neuro? Did she have as many seizures while she was on the depakote? Did he say why he took her off of it? I would tell her that the 3 of you, (you, here and neuro) need to sit down and discuss the whole "moving out on her own" and talk to her about it. He will most likely have some very important and valid inputs for both of you. Hang in there, and keep us posted..

I certainly understand both sides of your situation.  I had to move back in with my parents at as an adult due to my epilepsy after being discharged from the Army.  I had been on my own for quite a number of years.  I think agree with Ducky that the two of you should sit down with her neuro.  Where she might not listen to you because you're "Mom"...she might listen to her neuro because it's her Dr. and the "Dr. knows what is best for her".  How long has she been on the Lamictal?  Sometimes it can take a while for a med to build up to a theraputic level in her blood.  Sometimes it can cause what they call breakthrough seizures....and can actually cause more seizures at first before it helps to prevent them.  keep us posted and good luck.

when chan was on the depakote as long as she took it she was pretty much seizure free for 2 1/2 years. then she went to college and was a "true" college rebel and thought she had to do it all. she thought she could wean her self off her meds and we have not been able to get her straight since. we told her (her dad and i) that if she could not take her meds that she was not able to live alone. well she didnt and we went and made her move home. she is taking the meds now and her neuro wanted to try her on just one med cause she was taking such low doses of both together.

she had a seizure last friday that was really weird to her she normally does not know she has even had a seizure till we tell her afterward. but this time she says that she was dreaming of fairies and that they were trying to sufficate her. is this normal? the seizure only lasted 30 sec. her poor nose and face are swollen.

she goes back to the neuro in dec.


i really like this site it feels good to talk to others that have seizures and the parents of ones who have them. thanks for the info

Hi, my name is Danielle, I am 21 and have been taking lamictal for 4 years.  I also have tonic/clonic seizures so I understand where you are coming from.  I have had a little more luck with my seizures, they aren't as often, every couple of months or so.  But I am living on my own in San Francisco and going to school full time.  When I was in high school I also had to leave school because I was having 2 or 3 a day everyday, but when I started taking lamictal they settled down slowly.  It took a couple months for the seizures to really slow down, but I haven't had a seizure since February.  I would say, as hard as it is to let her go, it will be the best thing for her.  As an epileptic you are at a higher risk living on your own, but letting her live as normal a life as possible is the best thing for her.  Tell her, if she wants to move out to find some reliable roommates and give them all the information they need to take care of her in case of a seizure.  I have a full time job and am going to college full time, the risk is always there, but I promised myself I wouldn't let my seizures control me and it has been the best thing for me.  I hope you will have as much luck as I had with Lamictal.
