Square One Again

I'm back at square one again.  I had gotten up to 53 days seizure free.  I had started feeling like a normal person again. I started having myoclonic seizures again several days ago.  My neurologist increased my Kepra from 1500 mg. to 2000 mg per day so I am having to deal with that adjustment also.  I'm feeling really tired.  I had been feeling so well that I started over doing it though.  I was helping a friend on his campaign for governor here in KY and I just let myself get too emotionally involved.   I had also been working on the committee to get an clean indoor air ordinance passed for our city, which I am also passionate about because of my asthma.  I guess I just got too carried away with trying to be the "old me" again.  O.K., no more whining!

Hi Carla,

Im sorry to hear that your epilepsy has flared up again. Hopefully the increase in the Kepra will sort you out. It sounds like you need a bit of time out as well. If you make sure you take the rest you need to get your self back on track, you will soon be back to 53 days!

Hopefully given a few weeks you will adjust to the 2000mg. The alternative is that you get an add-on med. But that could be hard to adjust to as well. Only time will tell

I tried Lamictal.  I just could not tolerate it.  It made me nauseous and dizzy as well.  You know how we all react differently to the medications.  I guess you can relate to me if you have myoclonic seizures and asthma, the big difference being that I am 56.  I'm really doing well with the asthma right now, thank goodness. I got all this junk late in life. You guys are great on this board!  I am feeling a little better today.  My daughter, Tracie and granddaughter, Jillian picked me up this afternoon.  Tracie could see some improvement in me since Sunday.  I am on my way back up! I am planning to have the three grandkids, Jackson, Jillian and Morgan over to watch movies Friday afternoon.  I will be better by Friday.

Hey Darren,

I have been feeling a little better every day.  As we all know, seizures and seizure medication are just not very pleasant.  I am on the other side of it again now.

Were you hurt when you crashed your car?  Was a seizure the cause of the accident?

I really appreciate you taking the time to share that with me.  I don't know about other people, but it is helpful for me to hear stories like this.  I have to admit that I do get frustrated and get in the car and drive every now and then.  I know I shouldn't do it.  You just reinforced that for me.

It sounds like you might have been able to handle physical pain easier than what you had to go through, especially since it was your grandfather's car.  That's a lot to deal with.  For such a young person, you have a great deal of wisdom.

I am still feeling better every day.  Jackson, Jillian and Morgan came over today.  I will have to share pictures of them with you all.

My daughter had gone six months without a seizure, passed drivers ed and had a seizure the DAY before she was supposed to take her driving test! She was really upset and even suggested she could just lie on the application and not tell her neurologist about the seizure. Usually, she is such a great, easy-going kid and the fights we had over this were (in my opinion) the worst time in all the years we lived at home. Thank God there is a good community college within walking distance of our house, and she found a job she could walk to as well.

There is a happy ending to this story - with all the walking, she lost about 40 pounds and by the time she transferred for her junior year she was drop dead gorgeous. The city she chose for college (San Francisco) happens to have a great mass transit system, so that is working out as well, and she graduates from college in six months.

Still, I know when she is home it bothers her that her sisters can drive and she can't. It doesn't bother her so much if my husband and I or her older sister give her a ride but she refuses to have her younger sister drive her anywhere. Even though my daughter is bright, well-educated and mature in a hundred ways, that unfairness that her little sister can drive and she can't sets her teeth on edge.

Any suggestions? Or should I just count my blessings because she is so great in so many other ways?

It is a real shame that your daughter had the seizure 1 day before the exam. But it could have been worse. She could have taken the test, bought a car and then had a sz. In that sense, I would count my blessings. I can also understand how hard it is to watch a sibling drive. My sister is learning at the moment and im sure it wont be long before she is on the road. I am unsure of US law but in the UK, you can start driving again after 1 year sz free. If this is the case where you are, it is not something that her sister can do that she CANT, but something she can do if she WAITS a bit longer. Besides, look at all the good that has come out of this: Her college course, her weight loss etc... If the pictures I have seen on the TV of SanF are anything to go by, there should be no issues getting transport! lol
