right temporal lobe surgery

in 2 days i am having right temporal lobe surgery. im so nervous im about to jump out of my skin.

im anxious to get it done and over with. ive stopped smoking for this, which makes it even harder.

ive spoken to several others on different chats that have had it done, and they said that they were happy to have it done, most of which no longer have seizures. ive had epilepsy for 11 years, and i hopw that this surgery will cure it. all prayers would be very appreciated. thanks!

My prayers are certainly with you.  I don't know much about this surgery personally, but from posts I have read it does sound like a lot of people have very good results with it.  I can understand that you would be nervous, I'm sure I would be.  After your surgery, please come back and let us know how you are doing.

Hi there Beke,

Im not sure how I missed this thread otherwise I would have wished you all the best as well! lol

How did your surgery go? I know that surgery on the brain is always risky but I have heard many people (Some of whom use HW) have had good results from it.

well, my surgery is over, and i am back home recovery very well. i left the hospital after only 5 days. i am truely blessed. with the help of the lord and everyone's thoughts and prayers and family. i made it. thank you all. becky

Glad that you said everything went ok with your surgery.  My sister-in-law just completed all the tests and was told she is a candidate for surgery for Right Temple Lobe.  She was told she will have it done before the end of this year.  She is afraid and I would like to know how you felt after the surgery.  She doesn't know if she wants to go through with it. 

Does anyone know the best doctor for this type of surgery?  She lives in R.I. but willing to travel.

i know exactly how your sister-in-law feels. my emotions went up and down trying to decide on surgery. but my doc said that the chances of never having a seizure again was 80%. that made me feel better, cause i had at least 5 per month. i wanted a better quality of life, for me and my family too. after the surgery your face is swollen, with a little bit of a black eye, but ice packs will make that all go away. the only pain i had is where they did the operation which was on the right temp lobe, but pain meds and ice really helped alot. my swelling only lasted a couple of days, as did the black eye. surgery itself is always scary no matter what it is. but i know that the word brain, makes it sound worse. i only stayed in the intensive care unit a couple of days, before i was transfered to a regular room. i was able to go home just 5 days after surgery. the only after effect that i have is a little bit of peripheral vision loss in my left eye, but that will return also. as told to me by my doc, the brain takes a little time to heal, and my recovery has been successful . i feel better knowing that im on my way to being seizure free. i know how scared you sister-in-law is,i was right there in her shoes over 2 wks ago,but i think in the end, like me, she will be glad she made the choice to have it done. my thoughts and prayers are with you. please let me know how it is going. i'm in kansas and my surgeon did a wonderful job. and the hospital was st. francis. this is also where my nuro doc is located. let me know if you would like more info. take care.

Hello Beke,

Hope you continue to feel well after your recent surgery.

I just visited my sister-in-law tonight at her house and we were talking about your infomation you gave about your surgery.  My sister-in-law said they would have to shave her head before the operation . 

What do you do after the surgery? Do you just wait for the hair to grow back or at some point are you able to wear a nice wig that looks like your own hair.  She thinks she would wear a loose hat at first.  What were you told you could do?  I would think you would have to wait awhile before putting anything on your head for the head has time to heal. 

Her next appointment for the doctor to discuss if she will have the operation is not until the middle of October.

Hi Irene.
i didnt have to shave my head, cause my doc told me that hair wasnt concidered an infection problem, and also they just cut and peel back the skin where they are going to operate. so unless i wanted to i didnt have to. i think however they just shave the area where they will operate, and not the whole head. but i would ask to be sure. since she will either have staples or stitches put in after the operation, you have to keep the insion area clean, so i dont think she will be able to wear anything on her head until they are removed which iusually takes a week. im sorry i cant be more helpful on this, but ask the doctor and he will be able to tell her what she can or cant do. please keep me informed.

                 My name is Michael and I had my right temproal lobe removed back in 1999 for my seizures as well.They didn't shave my whole head,just the area that they were gonna open up.The surgery it self wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.I had noctournal seizures.I had seizures only in my sleep.I would 4 or 5 a week.Since the surgery I have been doing GREAT.Like Becky said my face was swollen,my right eye was a little black,and my left eye was shut completely for about 2 weeks.Before the surgery my Neuro.said there was a chance that he may cut a nerve that controls the movement in my left eye.Well he did and nerve healed up in about 2 weeks and my left eye opened up.The only thing that is different know is my memory.I have a real hard time with my short term memory.Other than that I would do it all over again because my seizures are 100 percent better.

So glad to hear you are doing well. I had a RTL in 2002 at the UVA hospital in charlottesville. I'm doing great! no seizures since my surgery 5 years ago. God is good!

I did not get my hair shaved, the neuro surgeon just shaved the area they had to cut. No one can see my scar, but however I do have an indentation on my right temple, and the only way to fix that would be to have plastic surgery. The way I wear my hair it doesn't show, so I'm going to leave it at that. :)

I hope that you continue to stay seizure Free. anyone else here that is considering surgery, I would be more then happy to share with you any info I can give you.

I suffer with complex partial seizures for over 25 years, and it feels sooo good not to have to worry now.

I just had a right anterior partial temporal lobectomy last November. The day before Thanksgiving, so that put a damper on the holidays. Because medication was unable to control my seizures, this was my only chance to put it behind me. I didn't have any seizures until I was 52 years old, so needless to say this has been a rough couple of year. No seizures since the surgery, so I am taking it day by day. For anyone contemplating surgery, I would be happy to talk to you about what to expect, and the procedure. I'm glad I did it.

I just posted back to Crozier about your offer.  I don't know if she is talking about the same type of surgery or not.  If you have time, would you please respond to her post.  Darren is away right now and this is something that I just don't know anything about.  I was only diagnosed 18 months ago myself.
