My son has to get injection with bone scan, is this right?

Hi--

I spoke with radiology about my son's scan and they mentioned that he is getting an injection with it, two hours prior, and I'm wondering if this is typical for bone density studies.  We can't get any info on how his MRI is abnormal, just that it is, and we think maybe it is from his trileptal, but wondering if this is the right type of bone scan to tell?  I didn't get an injection with my scan for osteoporosis, but this type of bone density issue is different maybe?  Any help would be greatly appreciated. Just a worried mom.

Hi there,

hmmmm... this is a tough one and I am not going to claim to be ANY kind of expert here. Aren't bone density tests all testing for the same thing? Surely your bone density doesnt change from test to test. I have heard of people having an injection prior to such tests but I wouldnt know what it is for. Your best bet is to ring radiology and keep asking questions until it makes sense to you.

Hi Marji,

I know how worried you must be.  Check out this link:  http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/bone-scan/CA00020

It will tell you how the bone scan is done and what the injection is for.  It is basically just a tracer that is injected that goes into your bones that helps the during the scanning process.  I've had this done many years ago and it is completely normal. Hang in there. :-)

Thanks, Darren and Beth. Radiology said it was a tracer. I'm just not used to my docs being so closed lipped about this stuff and it is scaring me. I know that my son must be worried, but I've tried to let him know it is probably just minor. He is struggling with school right now and his emotions are off the chart and I can't blame him. He's getting so angry now, like he did before his last seizure and it scares me. He also has a heart condition, Wolff-Parkinson-White and when he has a seizure it could be very dangerous, even life threatening. I've tried to get him to come out on the forum, I just can't seem to get him to take care of himself or take responsibility for his illness or his handling of it anyway. I just don't think he can handle one more thing being wrong. He hates his meds. Its a mess.

It is hard for anyone to come to terms with having their lifestyle interrupted on such a large scale... and the younger you are the harder it is. I found it so hard when I was 15 just being diagnosed with epilepsy. I cannot begin to imagine how your son feels. It is so easy for people to shut the illness out and pretend that it is not there and that is heart-breaking for people around you who care (Like you). All you can do is offer your support and be there when he needs you. Try being his best friend rather than his mother. (It works for me and my mum).

I really hope things start coming together for you. Keep us posted

My son had his scan today and it looked like he had some problems with his legs being bowlegged and the bone not showing up very well. They took additional x-rays of his legs. This is a new problem, since his abnormal MRI was of his lumbar spine and didn't include his legs. There didn't seem to be any lesions or big bad abnormal areas, just overall faintness and bowleggedness. Guess it sounds like the vitamin D problem.
