I had a scan done saying i have a little abnormal brain tissue.  Not epilepsy though.  The doctor said avoid alcohol, drugs, and get sleep, but if i hadn't had a seizure yet i probably will never have one.  I'm 19 years old, i've done drugs, legally for broken bones, drinken alot of alcohol, smoked cigerettes and had plenty of times of only getting 4 hours of sleep and never had a single seizure.  Does this mean i probably still wont get one in the future?

I want to welcome you to HealingWell.  I'm sorry, I don't have an answer for you.  Are you being seen by a neurologist?  I do not have any idea what abnormal brain tissue means.  Darren, the moderator of the forum, will probably be around later on.  He lives on the other side of the world and is probably fast asleep right now.  I just wanted to respond and let you know that someone is hearing you.

T Fox, it sounds like perhaps you have some small scarring on your brain which has the potential to cause seizures but so far has not. This can happen from a head injury of some kind, from stroke-like syndromes or can even occur during birth. I'm not sure why you had the scan done, but I assume you were having some sort of symptoms?

The reason for the doc's recommendations is that narcotics and alcohol do lower what's called the "seizure threshold", making it easier for seizures to occur. Excessive tiredness can do the same.

As to whether you'll develop seizures in the future, I suspect there's no way to know. You increase the chances of never having one if you do limit your drinking and use of narcotic drugs. Probably Darren will be able to respond more intelligently to this part of your question than I.

Hi there T-Fox,

I guess the main question here is whether you are likely to have a seizure. The honest answer is that everyone is different and the potential is different. Things like excessive alcohol intake, lack of sleep, drugs (including some pharmacuticals) can all cause seizures. If I were to do those things, I would almost certainly have a seizure. Did the doctor give you any other information about the 'abnormal brain tissue' ? Please know that you are definately being heard and I, like the other moderators and members here, will give you all the support, advice and information we can.

Well i had it done cause i had a couple migraines and needed to see if everything was ok. thats when they found the tissue, which had nothing at all to do with migraines, but that's why i had the scan.  the doctor didnt say anything else other than what he told me except for had i never had the scan, i would have never known. and if i hadnt had a seizure by now, i probably wouldnt have one. but i needed to make sure before i go to college

It sounds like (and I am going out on a limb here) like the 'abnormal tissue' may have been there for some time and my gues is that if it has not caused you a problem up to now, I guess its not likely to cause you a problem in the immediate future. But as I said in my previous post, everyone is different so there is no way of really guaranteeing it. Even if you did have a seizure and were diagnosed as having a seizure disorder such as Epilepsy, there is no reason why you shouldnt go to college. Dont let seizures (or the fear of them) hold you back from following your dreams / living your life.

Oh no, the reason i wanted to make sure before is because i'm going to be in a frat at college. same one as my dad's. and just wanted to get an insight opinion for drinking. and i think i got one. my dad, doctor, and even your guess said i probably wont have a problem with it, so i'll continue things unless proven wrong by a seizure. thank you for your comments. and i think what your doing here is great, especially for people who really do have something wrong like epilepsy so they can talk about it. i'm just merely paranoid. but this is a good thing. thank you for your time.

Excessive drinking is never a good thing whether you suffer from seizures or not so its not something I would recommend you carry on doing.
