Hi, I am new to this board because I was diagnosised Friday w/seizures.  My question is how does having seizures effect your ability to have a license to drive?  I don't want to have to rely on everyone but also don't want to drive if is dangerous.  My doctor says in 30 days I can drive.  Thanks for  your time.

Thank you for the insight.  Maybe I didn't word my question correctly.  I was placed on medication for the seizures and I'm not driving for a min. of 30 days.  I was interested in on how as a seizure patient a person has confidence they won't have a seizure while driving.  I am apprehensive about driving because for me it is an unknown and frankly, scarey for the very things mentions in the article posted, I would never want to cause an accident.  I trust my doctor, it's just frightening I was advised that I may progress to grand mal w/out meds. How do you drive w/confidence on the meds. Thanks, have a great day.

The only way to drive with confidence is to stay off the road for a while until you acheive seizure control.  Then you will be more confident once your situation is under control.  I didn't drive for 6 months after I was dxed and meds were working.  You should try to just stay off the road for a while.  Take care, Tracy

Hi Julia,

I understand exactly what you mean. It can be a scary thing to get back out there driving after learning you have seizure-disorder. In my state you have to be seizure-free for 6 months before driving.
Can I ask if you have an "aura"? That's a warning that you're going to have a seizure... because i do, it helps. i usually have about a couple min. to lay down or get in a safe place.
Also, once your medication is regulated it will probably calm your nerves a tad also. But because of this i take extra precautions and keep more space than normal between me and the car ahead of me, etc. mostly because i feel the medication slows my reflexes down some.
When u are able to drive - i'd take it slow. only go where you have to until your confidence is back.
Have you only had 1 seizure? Are they doing any testing?

Hi- I'm Jennifer & I am new to this whole seizure thing too..On 1-26-06 I had a grand mal seizure...I was not aware what had hapened til I was in the ambulance---still not totally sure what had actually happened til later....I have 4 kids- I homeschool them & now I cannot drive until I am seizure-free 6months AAAAHHHH!!!I understand the concern for when you do get back on the road...I was a perfectly heathly person---nobody in my family as ever had issues with seizures----I do not recall any weird feeling to warn me or anything...It scares me to think at any given moment - it could happen---however, I am on medication that will hopefully keep it from ever happening again...

Hi everyone, thanx so much for your in put.  To answere the question about aura, yes I do have them only previous to recently I didn't know that's what it was.  I had an office EEG and one in the hospital in the past couple of  years.  Then they did a 24 hour which led to an in house Video EEG this past week.  I wasn't even there 24 hours and they started me on meds.  Dr said he usually likes to wait 48 hours unless he is absolutely sure but he was sure and didn't want me to continue w/out meds.  I guess the kind I'm having can progress to Grand Mal.  I have never had a grand mal.  I am thankful that I was able to find a DR who specialize in Seizure Disorders, my Neuro sent me to him.  I think maybe it is a good idea to get used to the meds even after the DR's get things regulated.  Again thanx and best wishes to everyone.  It helped me to hear from people w/experience dealing with seizures. :-) Have a great day!
