Seizure Yesterday

I had a Gran-Mal seizure yesterday in front of my kids (first one they ever saw).
DON'T ALTER YOUR MEDS without your Doctor's advice.
If you think you're getting better, (I did and look what happened.

I had a headache for 2 days before that but I just assumed that I was catching a cold.
Yesterday morning I had gone in to my son's room to get something and the last thing I remember before my seizure was him lying in bed sleeping. This time I had no aura to warn me. I just felt dizzy for about 5 seconds (see what I mean about driving ~ not being able to pull over fast enough) before that and then the next thing I remember, he was standing behind me, shaking me and kept asking me if I was alright.

It must have gave him a good scare (all his DISRESPECT he had before had gone out the window).
He said I was out for about 5 mins. but still stayed on my feet.
He kept asking me all day long if I was O K.

The last Gran-Mal I had was last October/2004, before that Dec/2002, before that was my first 1979. I do have auras every week, sometimes several times. Stress is the main trigger but sinnce I have retired it must be due to my ageing.
(I guess I was taking too much for granted)

I am so sorry about your seizure. I have
always had Complex Partial Petite Mal Epilepsy.
I have had Grand Mals in the hospital. But
I have a question for you. My Dr.'s are
thinking I may be having Aura's. What are
they? I never had aura's before a seizure.
I have have epilepsy for over 15 years now
and have gone through 5 brain surgeries and
the VNS implant. I went four years w/o a
seizure and now I am not sure what is
happening. I go into the hospital in a couple
of weeks to find out if my seizures are back or not.

But may I ask, when you have a aura what are they like?
I am used to seizures but not Aura's. I don't
know those. Any imput would be great.

Auras are different for everybody. They usually come about a few seconds before a Gran-Mal  or sometimes you just get an aura and no seizure.

An "Aura" can be a strange smell, sound, ringing in the ears, seeing stars (billieness) in the eyes, etc.

Usually when I have an aura, I know the big one is comming so I have time to either sit or lye down.

I had a grand mal seizure myself two weeks ago, first grand mal I have had. I was alone at a grocery store, so my kids did not see it happen, thank goodness. I know how you feel though. The manager of the store said that I fell back, hit my head pretty hard and laid there completley out for about two minutes, then I went into the seizure. I remember paying, and then nothing until I was in the ambulance. It's scary trying to remember what happened, I keep thinking that I hear the EMT's telling me that they are taking me to the hospital. I was just like you Randy, not taking my meds like I should have been. I'm supposed to take 2 pills in the AM, 2 in the PM. I have skipped my PM dose for a very long time.
One question...where you really sore after your grand mal seizure? My legs, torso, arms ached very bad!

I have grand mal seizures as well, but I believe that it is better that your children know about your seizures than having it kept a secret from them. To be honest w/ you, I would try to let them understand the reason for you doing what you did (having the seizure) and letting them know what to do if you have another one. I would then ask them to ask as many questions that they have to you and you answering those questions. I am sure that they would be frightened of you at first, but you have to realize that you are their father and that you love them very much. Look at it this way...what happens if just your children are at the house with you and a visitor comes. You have a seizure and the visitor has no clue what to do; wouldn't you want your children to know what to do to inform the visitor since you would not be able to inform the visitor because of the fact that you are having the seizure? Another possibility would be that you are giving a speech to an audience of course and only your children are there because your wife had something important that she had to do. The audience has never seen a seizure before and you happen to have one; wouldn't you want your children to help in calming them down and explaining what to do?
