I had taken a break from this site but hastypastry is still down, so I was browsing and found this post.

I was told to get one, and I also questioned how the dog would be treated. I'll be fine with my 'pets' before I put thousands of dollars into someones pocket who profits from turning a dog into a robot.

According to Deborah Dalziel, research coordinator for a University of Florida Veterinary Medicine study on seizure alert dogs, “There is this misconception that any seizure dog can be trained to alert, which just isn’t true. A dog can cue in on minute behavioral differences, but can't be trained to alert”. She points out that there are no scientific studies to support the many theories on how dogs detect an oncoming seizure. "What we know on how dogs can alert to a seizure before it occurs is still a mystery. From a scientific standpoint, there is still so much that remains to be determined," said Dr. Basim Uthman, Associate Professor of Neurology and Neuroscience at the University of Florida College of Medicine and Brain Institute.

One of my dog licks me or cries, the other one will bite (she gets confused). Neither were trained to alert, both were rescues - I'd rather take the money they charge for the dog and donate it to a shelter whom cares more about the animals well being than they do profit.

I owned a cat for seven years who was able to pick up on when I would have a seizure. I think it was harder for me to pick up on her cues that I was in trouble, than what it was for her to pick up on it. I've heard a lot about seizure dogs, and have thought about it, but it seems like way too much money. If I pay attention to myself, I can usually have a pretty decent warning time. It would still be nice to have one, I just can't justify the money.

Most places have systems in place to help you fundraise for the money for the dog. So technically, you don't have to pay for it out of your own pocket.  It does however, dramatically lengthen the time it takes to get the dog.  The company I am going through is much cheaper than most because they use rescue dogs instead of pure bred dogs.  I'm hoping to have it soon.  They are in the process of locating a dog for me now.

guy at the healthfood store says he gives his dog msm and his dog no longer has sieizures. Thought id mention this

we're not talking about dog's that have seizures. we're talking about a type of service dog that can potentially detect and warn it owner of oncoming seizures.

I know but if it works on dogs , maybe msm would be good to take, its not bad for you and helps with joints too. sorry i was trying to help, ill leave

seizure dogs are not trained to be robots and not all dogs can be seizure alerts dogs.  There are two types of seizure dogs.  Seizure alerts dogs can alert you to an ancoming seizure usually by bonding with the owner so well that it can recognize the difference between your normal behavior and then recognize your abnormal behavior when you're about to have a seizure.  Then there is the seizure response dog.  This dog cannot alert to seizures.  It is strictly trained to respond depending on the owners needs to the seizure once it has occured.  Most of the organizations are Non-profit 501-3 (c).  So, they are not profitting from the monies that you are paying.
