Child Not Doing Well in School

My son, Bradley, is 7 and is in 2nd grade. He was diagnosed in 1st grade with Mild Rolandic Epilepsy. He is behind in school. He is on Triliptal and has not had any seizures for over a year. It seams like he cannot concentrate on anything for a long time. I am not sure if it is the epilepsy, the medication or just a 7 year old not hearing me. I can talk to him and its like hes not there.

How is your child doing with his/her epilepsy in school? Any suggestions, comments. Please, I do not have much support on this.Thank you.

Thank you for your response. I have been in close contact with the school and they are wonderful. We are all a little frustrated because he doesn't finish work and doesn't pay attention to the teacher. What I am wondering is if this is normal that kids with epilepsy seem to have trouble in school? What have you noticed?

PS Nice pictures of your daughters. They are beautiful girls.

Thank You so much for the information. I will talk to the school next week. I want to nip this in the bud, so to speak, now before he gets into harder grades.

It is nice to get advice from someone who knows what I am going through. There are times when I feel like I am failing as a mother, though I know that I am doing everything I can for him. So thank you again.

How old is Grace? and how long has she been diagnosed with epilepsy?

Thank you for asking. He is doing  a little better. We are doing a Phyc test next month to see how to help him do better in school. One thing that I am very frustrated with is the fact that there are not enough Pediatric neurologists to go around. They are so busy that it takes weeks for them to answer questions.

Hi,

 I was an elementary teacher for many years and experienced many students on different meds. in the classroom.  I would research the side effects of the medicine and talk with his doctor about this.  In my humble opinion it sounds like he is zoned out on the medicine. I would also closely follow up with his classroom teacher and ask her opinion on this as well.  His dosage might be the cause.

my son is not epileptic nor has seizures but he is bipolar and add. the only thing i can tell you is to fight the school with all you have because they wont do alot unless pushed to do it. they have to follow a certain set of rules and laws and they do not like spending the funding they get for the No Child Left Behind law. i will admit i am very synical when it comes the school systems because of the fight i had to do to get my son evaluated and i thank God for his case manager at the school who pushed to get him evaluated. if it wasnt for her, they were going to wait a full school year before they did anything. her and i have worked very hard on helping my son and now he is in special ed and he is doing wonderfully. stay on top of the school and be leary of whom you trust. remember, they work for the school, and they will back it before backing you. my sons case worker almost lost her job because the superintendant was informed of abuse my son was receiving in the school and she told the principal and the superintendant that if they didnt do anything about it she was going to report it to the police. they were not too happy with her about that. she stood up and fought for my son and i thank God for her everyday. just wanted to share some of my experience with you. i will send prayers and angels to you and your son :)
