Time to get your flu shot

Just a friendly reminder if you are one of the many who get flu shots. Having a chronic condition like Fibro can make a bout with the flu worse for us than for normals and this disease kills many people every year. So make that appointment!

What a coincidence, I just got a notice at work today about a flu clinic this month; I will definitely be there.

Jeannie, I am scared of the flu shot since the last time I took it when i was a kid 33 years ago. I got sick with the flu afterward and haven't wanted to take a flu shot ever again! I probably should try it again, though. 33 years is a long time to be scared of something. I get a notice every year to take it since I have asthma.

Are you the one with the nifty pain journal? I still cannot find it.

Nope, I'm not the pain journal person.... about the flu shot. It's made from attenuated (killed, inactive) viruses so it's safe. Your body reads the protein patterns on the virus bodies and makes a template that it stores in your lymph nodes and builds an immunity response. Then, if you encounter a live flu virus your body recognizes it right away and mounts an attack. Without the shot your body is clueless and has to do the whole building of a response thingie while the virus is taking over your body and making you mighty sick. Although you may feel rotten for two or three weeks and recover, remember this bug kills thousands every flu season, especially the elderly.

I have had 2 flu shots and got sicker those years than ever before. my kids had it one year by the end of the school year I was getting letters from the school saying my kids had missed to much and would require a Dr. note for any more abscences Will never get it again.

I get one every year, and I haven't had the flu in a very long time.  I'm usually one of the first ones in line.  smilewinkgrin

Jeannie if you have never had a flu shot are you more apt to have a reaction to getting one???

 

I have never had a flu shot but I have never had the flu. But with getting older and having all this crazy stuff going on in my body I probably should.

Jeannie and others, I got my flu shot this morning and I wouldn't dream of not getting it.  A few years ago, when there was such a shortage, I stood in line five different times and they ran out of the serum before they reached me.  I was sick on and off all winter long.  When I get the flu shot, I rarely get sick and, if I do get sick, it doesn't last long and it's never the flu, either.

 

Marlee, if you are not allergic to eggs, you should not have a problem.  Your doctor will know.  I started getting the flu shots about 15 years ago and have never had a single problem with them.  I didn't even feel the shot today!  My arm isn't tender, either.

If you wouldn't have gotten your flu shot that year you might have been even sicker. People do not get flu from flu shots any more than they get polio from polio vaccines. You can't get flu from a vaccine... and last count I could get from CDC records shows that on average 36,000 people die from flu complications in the U.S. every year.

Sherrine, the year you stood in line was the winter of 2000/2001. My mother-in-law was living with us and and an invalid. She couldn't get a shot and got sick on a Sunday... was dead by Thursday. That flu bug moves mighty fast!

Jeannie...and everyone...

You are so right about definitely getting a flu shot. I had the FLU skull   about 15 years ago. If you have ever had the actual FLU skull (not just the "crud" or a cold), you will be the 1st in line to get your shot. That was a miserable month that I never want to repeat. Now, I am just waiting for a day when at least one of my arms is not so sore...Then, I am gonna get my flu shot. If that day doesn't comesoon, then I will just be brave and tough out some extra soreness for a good cause:) I hope everyone has a flu-free season!

P.S. For those who have children, they need to be immunized too. There is a "shot free" way to immunize- ages 2-49 can get FluMist which is administered intranasally(?sp).

I get my shot every year!  Like someone else said, if you ever had the flu (the real thing, not the throwing up bug that so many think is the flu) you will never miss getting the shot.
