What Price Comfort?

What price comfort?      A few nights ago I was awakened by a puppy screaming. I thought immediately that it must have been hit by a car. We live right in the middle of town and it happens too often. I went to the window and listened to see if I could tell where the sound was coming from and glanced at the clock it was 1:00 am.      I put my shoes on and walked outside and followed its pitiful sounds to the back yard. I have a very soft heart and I was dreading what I might find but I had to do something!      Oh what a relief when a little puppy came running up and I scooped it up in my arms. She was trembling but did not seem to be hurt in any way. I took her inside and gave her some milk and we settled in on the couch for the night.      It took nearly an hour for her to stop shaking and then I noticed her breathing was funny. In and out rapidly like she was panting with her mouth closed. Finally as I held her she became peaceful and with a long sigh she let her body relax and fell asleep.      It’s been a long time since I held a puppy. I have two dogs which I rescued from the pound but I forgot puppies possess a magical power. As I gave comfort to this little sweet thing I realized she was comforting me and it felt so good.      We cuddled all night and in the morning I called the phone number on her collar and returned her to her owner. I guess I’m just too soft hearted but I wouldn’t have put her out for the night at her age.       The point of all this….I wasn’t aware I needed comfort until my little night visitor stopped by with healing in her paws. This little animal touched my life and made me feel better somehow. I wouldn’t be surprised if I managed to add a new little fuzzy member to our already crowded household in the near future.       Those of you who are blessed with a spouse who can touch you on this level are so blessed. Yea for significant comforting others!   Those of you that have children and babies to hold in your arms are so blessed! For us all I prescribe a little time today to be comforted.

We  have one dog(pearl) she is a great dog. She is very comforting and loving black lab.  We also have two twin boy cats i found one day walking through our woods, they actually found me, they came running at me meowing, they were wanting a home. So i gave them one, they are real sweet.

What a warm and fuzzy story!

I watched my granddaughters all day this last Sunday and spent time with my granddog. I did not feel an ounce of pain the whole day. Cuddling and holding my 5 month old GD, doing a little girl makeup kit - eye shadow, lipstick, sparkles and nails with the 3 yr old. Of course she had to put makeup and sparkles on grandma too. You should have seen us- we were a hoot! It took forever to clean our faces but we had so much fun. I still am finding sparkles on me. Oh yes, and outside with the granddog playing and just chilling on the lawn together.

Why can't we bottle this stuff?? I know- I will just suggest to my son and daughter-in-law I'm going to move in with them and then I would not have any pain!  R-i-g-h-t.....

Oh Chuzzle what a sweet story. I would consider my DH loveable but it's not the same as holding a baby of any species. We have been looking at puppies and I'm keeping it a secret when we will be getting one but I know that feeling of holding a new life in my arms and it is precious. I think you should consider getting a puppy or kitten for the house. One that is 10 lbs or smaller.

 

Our Brandy was 10 lbs and she would lay on her back in my arms like a baby til she got sick. Because of her breed she never lost the puppy look so people couldn't believe she was almost 15 when we lost her.

 

GamJill, I have a big case of makeup for my granddaughters and there is some sparkle powder in there in silver and gold. After having the girls this summer I had sparkles everywhere. The 6 yr old got a red cowgirl hat and used silver powder to decorate it.

 

Believe me it is fun being grandma and enjoying them for awhile but when they live with you and your the main caregiver it isn't always fun.

Thank you. I have a deep, deep well of affection for animals; but especially for dogs. They are so much a part of me I cannot conceive of a life without at least one. Thank you. I could feel the puppy and smell her breath with your description.

     I suppose the rest of the story (as Paul Harvey used to say) will be hard for you guys to believe. But here goes.      This morning after my grand kids arrived my oldest girl decided it was hooky day. I know to all you teachers out there this is an outrage but she is a senior in high school and has a very light schedule. In fact she told me yesterday was spent in movies and a coloring contest. Fall break starts tomorrow and I guess they were getting an early start.      I saw some dogs that were dumped where I usually go fishing and bought some dog food to see if I could get close enough to help them. Today was the day I set aside for my rescue attempt so I invited my grand daughter Kelcey to go with me.      As we drove up to the side of the lake we noticed a spotted pit bull the size of my recliner. At first we sat in the car and just talked nice to him…..very nice! Soon his tail started waggin and we got out to feed him. But he was so excited to see someone he just licked us and nearly beat us to death with his big old tail. If you’ve ever seen the movie Homeward Bound and know the character Chance you’ll know pretty much what he looks like. (only much more stocky) He stood up and put his feet on my chest and then devoured half the sack of dog food we brought.       We figured Chance could probably fend for himself for a while so we vowed to bring him more food and scraps from the mission. I suggested we broaden our search around the side of the lake. Then Kelcey said, “I see something, Oh it’s puppies!”        Someone dumped two yellow lab puppies. They were going through trash sacks when we saw them. I parked the car and we walked up to them calling and talking baby talk. One ran a little ways off and hunkered down to hide and the other opted to just hide in the trash.        Lest I make this story too long….they are now safe, fed, bathed, wormed and probably will be sleeping with my grand daughter tonight. They are just old enough to drink milk from a saucer and eat softened puppy food.   It was great to see them finally trust us enough to manage a tail wag.       We stopped by the grocery store in town to get a box for them and found Chance a home. One of the ladies that works there said she would go rescue him after work. What a wonderful day! Thanks for listening

Chuzzle you have had quite a day. The good Lord works in mysterious ways.

 

Are you going to keep them or find them homes??? At least you will get your puppy fix for awhile.

I'm a cat person myself. I have always had at least one cat. At this very moment we have 4. 3 of them are all brothers from the same litter. The momma cat had abandoned them in the wall of my friends garage buried in the insulation. I spent 2 weeks cleaning out their eyes several times a fay and bottle feeding them as they were to little to survive on their own. They are happy healthy rambunctious 3 year olds now.

My fourth cat I got pretty recently. I'd had a cat that was my baby, Eekers was my love and always knew when I didn't feel good or if I was upset. He would always come and sit with me till whatever the trouble was passed. I lost him to a major blood clot in the heart this last March, he was 7 years old.

After waiting a bit to let the tears from losing Eekers calm down, I finally went out and got another older cat who we named Bubby from the county pound. He also is seven years old. He was feral at one point but has learned to trust me. The strange part is that he instantly bonded with me and started sleeping in the corner of the bed next to my pillows just like Eekers used to do. Maybe it's an age thing, or maybe it's just that he's that perceptive - I don't know. He's been my saving grace cause after Eekers went, I didn't think that I was ever going to be able to let myself fall in love with another cat like I had with Eek.

My cats are my life. I've never had children and never had a desire to do so, so cats have been my surrogate children. And it works out since I don't have to pay to send them to college, or worry about the as teens wrecking my car. haha. I love my babies and it's a mutual thing.

Piercings,      We also have two cats. On is 14 yrs old. We named her Patty Cat because she will come and pat you when she wants something. But her Indian name is She Who Sits By The Wall because she sits strait up with her back against the wall like a bear. Funny, funny.      Anyway what I wanted to share with you is about their cat pan. I've fixed them an outside "rest room" which I can clean through an outside access door. All you have to do is fix a rabbit hutch type enclosure and attach it to the outside of your house. At one of our houses we gave them access to it through a window. In our present  location they have access through a doggie door in the garage. If you like the idea I can share more detailed directions for the construction. It sure makes it easier to own more than one cat!      Thanks everyone for your comments. My grand daughters latched on to the puppies. And their Daddy promised to take them off my hands when they are strong enough. They have a place in the country. Right now we are trying to get the thousands of ticks off of them. They have certainly perked up since yesterday and I know they are going to be alright now.      When I checked on them this morning to take them outside at 6 am they were kissing my bare toes. They are so adorable.                                         

Chuzzle, we did kind of the same thing in our old home when it came to cat boxes.  Neil built a large box with a lid in the garage...up against a wall that led to an inside hallway.  He put their cat litter pan in that large box.  He then cut a hole through the wall.  The cats would go through the hole to use the litter and Neil could clean the litter pan in the garage.  No litter in the house!

 

Those puppies sound adorable.  I'm so glad you have found a home for them but it will be tough to let them go.

Chuzzle, Thank you for sharing your story I love puppy breath. Most people say that it stinks but I love it. We have 4 dogs and I dont know what I would do with out them yep 2 are at my feet right now. We have a 11 year old aussie rotweiller mix who has cancer We keep saying ok its time and then she does a miraculus turn around. The vet said we only have about a month that was 3 months ago. the fall seems to be doing wonders for her she was actually rolling around in the grass like a puppy. Aussies are very high strung puppies and a breader i know called to tell me her Aussie had 13 puppies if I was interested. I had told her a couple months ago about my Lucy. I can not and will not get another dog until she passes the stress of a little one might do her in since she would try to herd the puppy. You are so lucky its almost as if the puppies picked you. I wish you lots of luck and luck with your new family members.

That gives me an idea I could build an outside covered box for the puppy to use and she wouldn't have to go out in the weather to go potty. Where's the chainsaw.

Marlee- Another puff ball, am so excited for you! And the cowboy hat really did turn out? I was thinking it would be art in a childs eye only kind of thing! These kids are creative, aren't they- I had no idea you could color a dog with sidewalk chalk- 

And Sue- a granddog with dregs, any pictures of this?

Oh, and I love cats too, all of you cat lovers- but I am so allergic to them that my throat closes! Yikes-
