Spiraling out of control

Hi everyone,

I haven't been on the site in the past few days because I had some health issues. I was, and still am, having stomach pain and rectal bleeding.
Sorry, I know it's not the best thing to discuss. Any way, I went to my scheduled Doctor's appointment Friday 1/23/09. I told him my stomach has been hurting, he listened to with and pushed on it. He said to stop the Ibuprofen and that I may have a ulcer. He gave me Mobic and said to stop taking Ibuprofen. Stopped the Ibuprofen, I wasn't taking it all the time only as needed. I took the Mobic for the first time Friday evening with dinner.
By Saturday morning I was having pretty bad stomach pain. I took an extra prilosec. Later Saturday night I went to the bathroom and had blood
trickle out my behind, while taking a bm. It was quite a bit and scared me!! It stopped and hasn't happened since, but I did call my Doctor's office on
Monday and told them what was going on. I asked to get a referral back to see my gastrointologist. A nurse from my Doctors office called me back to ask me some questions because they were concerned with the bleeding. She said they would fax my information the gastrointologist and now I am waiting to hear back from them with an appointment. To make it worse I stopped taking all pain meds because my stomach is such a mess. I take tylenol when I absolutely need to. I'm eating a very bland diet. My body is starting to flare up from lack of pain meds which adds to my frustrations. Tomorrow will be 1 week since seeing the doctor and I still have not heard anything from the gastro doctor. Should I call the gastro doctor myself??

Hi Orlo.... Yes the blood was bright red...looked like a clot in it too! You said you talked to 3 doctors... did you ever get any where with them?

I would definitely call the GI doc's office tomorrow and see where they are at in getting you an appt. I have had several GI bleeds and can tell you it is not something you want to put off. The first bleed was a result of taking too many advil/ibuprofen because of massive joint pain, I had not been diagnosed with Lupus at the time and didn't know why I was hurting so badly. The doctors really didn't believe me when I told them I was having serious abdominal pains, but finally did an exploratory laperscopic surgery. Two days later I was bleeding rectally, massive bleeding. I called the doctor and she kind of blew it off, so I went to work and a couple of hours later I told my husband (we owned our own business) I think I need to go to the hospital. I drove myself to the hospital and when they drew my blood it came back that I had lost 1/2 the blood in my body! Needless to say they called my doc and she took me serious at that point, they put me in ICU immediately and I had to have a blood transfusion. It's a LONG story, but it took them 2 months to figure out what was going on and another massive bleed, but after them finally opening me up from my bellybutton down and going through my entire intestines they found about 9 inches of my small intestines had ulcerated. For some odd reason it was not showing up on any of the scans or nucelar med tests they ran. They byopsied it and said it was from all the advil/ibuprofen I had been taken.

PLEASE call the doctor and have them check your blood counts!

I would definitely call the Gastro doctor. Just say you were calling to see if they had received your information from your doc and if they had an opening to see you soon. Sorry you're having this trouble and having to wait makes it worse.

If the bleeding gets worse, I would then call your doctor and ask if they can get you in any earlier to see the Gastro doctor. Tell them what's going on. Sometimes your general doctor can call and tell them they need an asap appt. for a patient and they will get you right in. Good luck and hopefully it is nothing serious. Keep us updated!

Hi Tina,

Just writing to say I am thinking about you and try to keep calm and do just as you are with the diet. Many things could be going on and the GI doc will get a handle on it. Let us know how you are. God knows we have to constantly keep after these doctors.

Yes, hemrroids can bleed A LOT.  My dad had a lot of problems with them.  He had bleeding & they did some surgery that helped.  I don't know what pain meds you were on but if it was vicodin or anything like it it can cause a lot of bowel problems.  That's why I can't take them.

Hope you get this situation under control and give that GP a peice of your mind.. heck you can give him a peice of my mind too . since I'm not using most of it these days LOL!!

I hope you are feeling better.  I told my doctor that I can not take asprin/ibprophen because they cause me severe stomache problems and I end up vomitting blood.  Well, he must of thought I was just trying to get narcotic pain meds because he gave me mobic and said that it wouldn't cause any problems.  Less than a week later I ended up in the hospital vomitting blood.  The only med I was on was Mobic so the hospital doctors said that it was the cause.    Just food for thought...
