Foam Rollers

Statgeek, you ARE young!  LOL  We used to roll our hair in rollers and some were rollers with little brushes in them which killed your head and then they came out with rollers made of foam.  They felt good but your curls were squished in the area  you laid your head on.  Then they came out with plastic rollers, the size of a Pepsi can, that was a hard plastic and your wet hair would "stick" to.  They called them magnetic rollers.  This was before blow drying your hair became popular.

Hey there. Actually, a foam roller (in addition to being something used to curl you hair!) is a piece of "equipment" (for lack of a better word) that many athletes use to roll over their stiff/sore muscles for relief. It's basically a form of self massage. It's hard to explain what it looks like and I don't know how to post a link, so if you google "foam roller" you should come up with some results. The best way I can describe it is looking like a solid pool noodle. The only reason I know about these things is that I was/am a runner and also coach a running team. The foam roller can be used to relieve sore/tight muscles, and I believe it has been indicated for use in myofascial pain syndrome, so I would think it would be beneficial for fibro. The one thing I'd be cautious about (from experience) is using it on/around the tender points. Those are especially sensitive to pain and using the foam roller can caused bruise-like pain there.

I use something similar to a foam roller, it's called "The Stick." It also might be worth looking into.

I think it would be personal preference. I use a 2 foot long piece of a large diameter pool noodle. I put it on the floor and lay on it to stretch out my muscles. I use it under my hips, under my shoulders, and vertically down my back. I don't get too fancy. It really makes my back and shoulders feel better. I like pressure and find that it helps. A good deep massage gives me hours of pain relief.

I would guess someone that can't tolerate pressure wouldn't like it. If she has any neck or back conditions, she should talk to her doc first. If she took it easy, starting very slowly, I don't see why it would be a problem. You could always let your friend try your roller to see if she likes it.

I opened this thread to see if you meant foam rollers as in hair curlers or pool noodles. This was pretty funny.

OK... confusion comes naturally for me...I really thought we were talking about hair rollers since I never heard of any other kind of foam roller.. LOL!!!  I'm really old or really losing it

ROFLMBO!!!! qg, you have to over look some of the older ones on here the fog has really gotten to them. I would like to welcome you to our forum. I have tried the tennis ball in a long tube sock up against a wall but I have not tried the foam roller or pool noodle. My shoulders, shoulder blades and neck are a big source of pain for me. Actually, everything feels so tight in those areas this morning I could use a good gentle massage of any kind. Sometimes just my DH taking his finger tips and going in circles on my shoulder blades with a little bit of pressure is enough to make me feel so good.

This one had me rolling (not my hair)!!!! I had the foam roller used on me at a massage and it worsened my pain. You have to be so very careful with them.

I think it's so funny to read these stories of the lengths that women have gone to in the past to curl their hair. Way back when the "in" thing was a curling iron, a comb, and about an entire gallon of of Aqua Net hairspray. Had to have that "BIG hair" teased look in the 80's you know. (Mine never turned out right, though) Now today, apparently the "in" thing is hair as straight as a board. Every morning my daughter's in her room for like a half an hour with the flat iron, making the whole house stink like burned hair because oh my goodness, can't have even a lick of wave in the hair or you are just soooo uncool. lol

Sorry to digress there for a minute, but I think it's interesting how styles change and what we females will do to look "right", you know?

Qg-I too apologize for the digression. We really do care and want to help in any way we can! (Really!!!) We're just prone to the fibro-giggles around here sometimes. I don't know anything really about these foam rollers you're talking about, though, so I am sorry I can't be of much help there.

Hey Im not that old and was wondering about why someone was asking about foam rollers. My daughter has extremely curly hair and she spends an hour each day with the flat iron... Also as far as the foam roller for massage I have never heard of it.
