Hey everyone,

I'm new to this forum but not to this site.  I'm usually on the Ostomates forum.  I was diagnosed with FM almost a year ago and my pains are horrible.  They get in the way of daily routines.  I'm currently on Lyrica 150mg 3x a day and cymbalta 30mg 2x a day.  They are just not doing anything to relieve pain.  I can't get out of bed in the morning.  I go to school so my husband helps me get dressed and going in the morning.  The only thing that gives me some relief to get me through the day is taking 2 aleve.  I talked to the dr about it but I just don't feel he understands or is trying to find something to help me. 

my question is is there any other medication I can ask him about that any of u recommend or anything u all have done to alleviate the pain..PLEASE HELP!!! I'm really trying not to give up. I just don't know what to do anymore.

Hi Rita, and welcome. Please read the rescources in the beginning at the top thereis alot of useful information there I am sure one of the veteran members will be along shortly and can give you some advice. I do not take aleeve it just does not work for me. I take mortrin and tylenol. I also take extra vitamin D and Malic acid.. I think Sherrine is the one to talk to about the Malic Acid. I hope you get some relief soon.

Hi, RITAS, and welcome!  Aleve doesn't work for me either.  I use ibuprofen with food and extra strength Tylenol for pain and I do take malic acid/magnesium supplements for pain and fatigue.  Many with fibro also are deficient in vitamin D and that can cause more pain, too.

 

Check out the Fibro 101 thread..the second thread on the forum.  You will find links to good information about fibro, including a link all about malic acid/magnesium supplements and how they work in the body.  They don't work for everyone but they have helped many on this forum...including me.  There is also a link to good stretching exercises that really do help.  Keep moving and exercising.  Walking is a great exercise for fibromites. 

 

I'm glad that you decided to join in.  You probably realize that you have come to a great place.  We really do care about each other.  Anyway, let us know what your doctor says and how you are doing.  Hope to hear more from you soon.

Hi RITAS!!

Welcome!!!  I take Tramadol for pain.  Its helped a lot!!!  I also take Ibuprofen with it when its really bad.   Aleve actually makes my pain worse.. I don't know why, but it does. 

I also take a lot of warm showers when I'm cramped up.  It really helps.  I use a heating pad a lot, too.  Alot of folks here like their bed buddies, I don't use one because I have problems with hot flashes and night sweats. 

The advice that Sherrine gave you is spot on.. she really knows her stuff!!!  I plan to start the malic acid/magnesium too.  As long as it works well with my regualar meds.

Hi Ritas,

Just want to chime in and say Aleve does absolutely nothing for me and it is so highly recommended. I take the ibuprofen and follow the magnesium/malic acid regimen. It has really helped and I take 2000 iu of vitamin D a day. Be sure your doctor checks your vitamin D level.

One thing I would recommend is doing some stretches in bed under the covers before you get up. I like to do the "snow angel" because it kind of gets me loosened up. I also roll over on my hands and knees and do a kind of "cat stretch" to get my spine awake. I've been taking malic acid and magnesium since '04 and wouldn't let a day go by without it.

When things are really bad I have darvocet from my doc. Wish I could help more.

Hi Ritas,

Welcome to HealingWell. I take norco and soma for muscle pain. But I also take the malic acid/magnesium supplements along with the vitamin D. Actually D3.

I hope that you can find something that works for you.

Tramadol is what has been prescribed for my pain. It takes the edge off for me, but doesn't get rid of the pain.

I was also tested and found to be severely deficient in Vitamin D. I'm on an Rx of 50,000 IUs weekly, and take 1000 IUs daily.

You sound a bit disenchanted with your doctor - don't hesitate to go find one that you are more comfortable with if need be, but be careful so you don't get perceived to be "doctor hopping" just to get pain meds - alot that seems to be going on by people who are abusing pain meds, making it "a pain" (pun intended!) for those of us that have legitimate needs.

I hope you find something to get you some relief soon.

Hi Rita, welcome to our little piece of the world.  This is a great place with very good & kind people.  I take Ibuprofen 600mg every 4-6 hours & this seems to help my pain alot.  I also take a B cmplex because B1 & B2 & I think B6 help with pain.  I use my bed buddy often for painful spots. I did try Aleve but as the others have said it did nothing for the pain at all.  I haven't been able to work for about 4 years so can't even imagine having to get up in the mornings.  I am always so impressed with those of you who can. 

The other things I have found that help me is getting good sleep & coming to this forum even when I can't do anything but read.  We have alot of fun here & laughter is such good medicine.  I hope you come back often.  Read about this illness, all you can find because knowledge is power.  Hugs, Denise

Hi Rita and Welcome-

Can relate to the horrible pain. I got fibro about a year ago also and the pain was so bad I could not walk 30 ft. That was late winter of last year. When summer came, the horrible pain started to ease up- but by late fall, I have had quite a bit of pain and continue to. I know with me that the cold and fibro do not mix.

I am so sensitive to meds, so I take Tylenol 4,000 mg. a day and I also have Darvocet for back-up. Warm baths help me, but I think it is going to take winter to get overwith before my bad pain eases up.

I would talk to your Dr. and tell him your about to seriously "give up"- maybe that will put a little pressure on him to help you more, if you don't feel you are getting proper care, I would find a new Dr.
