For myself, I don't take a lot of fibro meds because they make me feel worse (nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, etc.), and I don't feel like the pain is helped enough for me to put up with all of the side effects.
That being said, I have tried lots of fibro meds and am willing to try proven new ones if they become available. I usually give the meds a decent trial period, and if I don't see significant improvement (which I haven't with any) or I experience miserable side effects (which I have with most), I stop taking them (with dr. approval/knowledge).
I think that doctors don't really know how to treat fibro, so they use their only resources which are really powerful medications which may or may not help. I had one doctor who treated me like I was being "non-compliant" because I didn't want to participate in a fibro drug study for Xyrem. I really don't want to be a guinea pig, and I certainly didn't want to be patronized, so I fired him.
I guess the way I see it is that in the end, it is your body. Don't let a doctor pressure you into taking something that you aren't comfortable with - if there are side effects, you will have to deal with them, not him. Also, if you don't feel the meds are helping or if the side effects are intolerable (and only you can decide that), there is nothing wrong with telling him that they aren't working for you and trying to get them adjusted or changed or stopping them all together.
I'm sorry this was so long, but I've been pressured by docs to take meds that I really didn't want to, and I finally learned that I really do have the final say on what I put into my body.
