Prednisone question???? Please help

My Rhuemy just put me on Prednisone because I left a message that I was in a lot of pain. Well I took 1 prednisone tonight and my hips on down are hurting like heck. Why would I hurt more with the Prednisone? I think I'll just see what else happens over the weekend.

I took all my pill tonight (whole). I thought I would get a good nights sleep.??!! I took everything at 8pm and then went straight to bed. I can not believe I woke up at 12:30am...Usually when I take all of my pills I sleep for 12 hours. Now I'm back to my old habits again.... gurrrrrrrrrrrr I don't know what to do? Plus both of my ear have been ringing for hours on end and it hurts to even talk to someone on the phone because the phone (voice) is too loud. I did turn down the volume on the phone.

Help me.

It sounds like maybe you're having some issues with the prednisone. I can't take the stuff myself as it makes me hurt worse and gets me all hyper and I can't sleep. I know it is dangerous to just stop taking it cold turkey, though, so you should definitely get in touch with your Dr. and see how you should taper off if that's what you decide to do.

Donna is correct.  Prednisone doesn't help Fibro pain, it only makes it worse. The reason is exactly what Donna mentioned.  Fibro isn't an inflammatory disorder.  So when you add prednisone (cortisol), you have way too much natural and synthetic cortisol in the blood.  Excess cortisol actually makes pain worse. 

 

I have to take prednisone for my Lupus.  When I'm hurting it's hard sometimes to know if it's from my Lupus or my Fibro.  So I do the test.... I increase my prednisone a bit.  If I hurt more, then it's actually my Fibro flaring.  If I hurt less, then I know it was Lupus and increasing the predisone was the right thing to do.

 

Definitely talk to your doctor and tell him how you're feeling.  I can't understand why in the world they would put you on prednisone for your Fibro.  You don't have any inflammatory diseases do you?  Let us know how you're doing, okay?

I am going to call the Rhuemy's office on Monday and tell them I'm not going to take the Prednisone anymore because it's Not doing any good for me except giving me gas pains and keeping me awake all night. The nurse or (Person) that I talked to at her office said that I had an Inflamitory (something) I can't remember?........OH Inflamitory Pattern. I do have an appointment with her on the 22 of May.

At least the good news is I have my appartment ALL to myself. My son is with his Uncle for a little bit today. (Hugh sigh)

My rheumy has been playing with high doses of prednisone for me over the last few months. I was warned to take them in the morning as they can have a caffeine type reaction and make it hard to sleep. I also noticed that, while it was taking care of my swollen lymphnodes, it was making my back, hips and knees hurt a lot more than normal.

I know there are a lot of side effects with prolonged usage, but my lymphnodes swell back up with a vengence as soon as I'm off the treatment. My rheumy's thought is that if it helps, it helps and we'll deal with the side effects as they come up. Probably not the best plan, but at least it's a plan, which is more than the rest of my docs have.

I have had to take Prednisone several times in my life for Crohn's disease, iritis of the eyes, and for autoimmune inner ear disease.  For my hearing problem I was put on 80 mg. a day for one month.  It basically shut down my immune system, I was catching everything that came down the pike, and I looked like the Pillsbury Doughboy.  It is nasty medication but necessary occasionally.  I only was prescribed it for short term use.

 

I am posting a link all about Prednisone from the Physician's Desk Reference.  Hara, under "Possible Food and Drug Interactions" it mentions this: 

Prednisone may decrease your carbohydrate tolerance or activate a latent case of diabetes. If you are already taking insulin or oral medication for diabetes, make sure your doctor knows this; you may need an increased dosage while you are being treated with prednisone.

Hi Hara,

I'm sorry that you are feeling bad with the prednisone. I know many people who can not take it due to the various side effects. Long term use and/or high doses can intensify any side effects. It would be a good idea to talk with your doctor about it. They also need to let you know specifically what it was diagnosed for and the duration of treatment.

I've taken a low dose predinisone now for over 3 years. I have been trying to taper for quite a while but have not been able to come completely off yet. I have RA along with the fibro so some days I can not tell what to attribute the pain to. I have had a signficant weight increase in those years along with the "moon face"...uuggghh. I've had to take medications to treat the side effects; it is really crazy. I'll be seeing a new rheumatologist in June and we'll see what happens.

I hope you get to feeling better soon. Again let your doctor know what is going on with the side effects; it is very important.
