Handicap Sticker

Do you live in the US? If so, go to the dmv website and print out the application, fill it out, then take it to your doctor. I have Kaiser and dropped mine off at the business office. They send to the doc to get signed, the doc sends back to medical office who contacts you. Or your doc will sign it and contact you that it is done. You then go to the dmv and turn it in. Or else you can do it by mail. I didn't want to wait, so I went in person. The wait times seem to be shorter at dmv now.

Remind your doctor that you are a falling risk as well.  I walk well!  I really do!  I can walk a long long way!  I still use a handicapped placard because I cannot manage my balance.  I cannot look up when I walk.  I am so at risk when walking through parking lots.  I have almost gotten hit a number of times because I cannot look up from walking without losing my balance.  I use a cane most of the time but I have to be very careful. 

I do get the stares and I have had a police officer ask to see my plate and paper work.  Sigh.  It was fine though.  Please keep the paper work that proves that the plate belongs to you.  If you are like me, you look "fine."  You must keep that paper in your wallet or purse. 

Good luck.  For me it was a matter of printing a paper from the DMV site and having my doc sign it.  No physical, no questions asked.  My doc knows me well so it was a snap.  I don't abuse it. 

I've had a handicap placard for a year now, but I got it because of the arthritis in both of my knees. Your dr. just signs the form and you take it to the DMV and they will issue one for you. It does come in the mail, but they gave me the form that is stamped to use until my placard came. Just set it on the dash on the driver's side.

I don't know if this is something that is done everywhere, but my dr. wrote a pres. for my walker so my insurance paid for most of it. Maybe this is something that can be done for a cane?

I've tried to get the handicapped placard, but the Dr. won't sign the DMV form. What do I do next?

I need to make the appt. with the primary to get the DMV papers signed. Earliest appt. is in Sept.

Well I've had a handicapped placard for awhile now. I got it before I was even diagnosed with fibro. Back when I was in college, I was having a lot of trouble carrying all my school books up the steps from the parking lot to the campus. I got the form from somewhere online. Then I went in to see the doctor for something unrelated but brought the form with me. I wasn't even seeing my regular doctor cause she wasn't available. So I told this doctor that didn't even know me what my situation was and asked him if he'd fill out the form for me. He said sure thing and filled it out. Then I mailed it in and got my placard shortly. I was really surprised how easy it was to get a handicapped placard, and somehow I think it's too easy for people to get them that don't really deserve them, but at least I've got mine for those days that I really can't walk that far.

Donna, is it only good for 6 months TOTAL, or renewable every 6 months - if needed? Because if you are going to be ALL better in 6 months and won't need that card come April that would be great. I could understand a short term card if say, someone breaks their hip or leg, but what you have isn't going away, unfortunately .

I have thought about it for me, but 6 months doesn't help me. I have a problem w/ the heat and cold, icy, snowy winters.

Also, is it only good for the 6 months that is dated on the form from the drs. office or when you present it to town hall? Is it just your town or the whole state w/ the 6 month limit?

Sorry to ask so many ???, just wondering how all this works.

Hi Alice...because I am new to this, I probably asked for a temporary sticker without realizing it.  I told her I need one for the winter because I am so unsteady on my feet and fell twice last year.  I think it is good for six months then I can renew it or ask for a permanent one.  I notice some people have handicap license plates intead of the little piece of card board you hang on your rear view mirror.  Are those the permanent ones??

My Handicap Placard is Red! Oooo, I feel special! Seriously, I did get one via the mail. I printed out the application online (it is only 1 page), filled it out and took it in to my pcp office. I left it with him for a day or two, picked it up and then mailed in with my $6.00 check. (oh, yeah, I made a copy just in case) My doc marked the 6month 'box'. I think I received it within a couple weeks. I just remember it really didn't take all that long. I did not go to the DMV office because the lines are ridiculous around here. I'm in Los Angeles.

If you all have a good relationship with any of your docs, they can sign off the application for you. I am really glad I went ahead and did it. It sure has come in handy (lol, get it, handi?) especially at the grocery store and some of my doc visits, big old medical bldgs.

I say, GO FOR IT!
