why oh why do my hips hurt so much??

Besides fibro, I have myofascial pain and arthritis in the neck and hypermobile joints in hands and hips.   I asked my doc for xrays of hips because I thought they had arthritis because they hurt, but the doc said no.   I have been reading about arthritis and learned that it causes stiffness and inability to bend knee to chest or rotate knee inward.  I can do both.  My hips are overly flexible.  But they hurt so so bad right now.  It was a lot harder to walk today than normal.  I was also in a flare with pain all over and fatique.

The pain is in the center of each butt cheek and on the side at the joint and kind or wraps around in between the two spots.  Do you have hip pain?  How do I know what is causing it and how to treat it?

Hi Sue, Hip pain is annoying and can be difficult to figure out what is causing it. If I am

having a flare with pain all over I attribute the pain to my fibro. If the hip pain is

accompanied with pain down my butt cheek and leg, I blame it on my sciatica. If it's

sciatica, taking Mobic (Meloxicam) and Flexeril helps. If the pain is related to fibro, I

will take Flexeril when it gets bad. I also have arthritis and I know when that is flaring

because the pain is differant than fibro. My fibro pain is allover pain, where as my

arthritis is joint pain with noticeable swelling.

The cold and damp weather can really aggravate hip and joint pain, soaking in a

hot bath and doing some gentle stretching helps with the stiffness and achiness.

Sue I have given up on trying to figure out what is causing pain, I have MPS, arthritis, sjogren's and fibro. Put them in a hat and pick one and it is probably causing pain. smilewinkgrin I don't have a great deal of pain in my hips as yet, when I do it's cause I have done something to cause it. My worst arthritis is in my neck and hands and my hands get very stiff, some of my fingers will only bend so far.

Me too..hip pain that appears to originate in the middle of my butt cheek.  It is the worst when I lay down...must press on the nerve or something but it wakes me up.  Don't know if it's sciatica related as I thought that was a stabbing kind of pain. Mine is just a gnawing ache.

Hi - nice to know I am not the only one with bad hip pain.  I have butt cheek pain too, but that feels like it is a different pain than the one in my hips. My hip pain feels like it is right inside the joint, and hurts to stand up and walk.  There are points on the front of my pelvic bones on each side that hurt to touch.  I find  heat feels nice, but it is just a short term fix.

Did the doc only do a xray? If so, you might want to ask for a MRI. There are other types of arthritis that might show up more on the MRI. Good luck and I am so sorry you are hurting so.

I get hip pain but it isn't constant.  I'll have it bad for about a half a day and can barely put weight on the leg and then it will go away.  I usually get it at night and it wakes me up and it's hard to get comfortable.  When this happens, it's usually my right hip.  I'll lay on my back, bend both legs at the knee with feet flat on the mattress, and I will put my right hand under my hip for a while.  For some reason, it settles it down.  Then I can take my hand away and usually can fall asleep.

The doctor will not give me an xray.  At least the pain dr will not.  Maybe my primary will.   I tried looking it up online even though I know it is not the best way to figure stuff out.  It says on the Internet that hypermobility joint syndrome can cause pain.  So because I am not stiff, I am assuming it is that. 

One reason I wanted to know what was causing the pain is that I used to do yoga stretching exercises on my hips.  But over extending the hips can make them worse if you have the hjs.  But the stretching is supposedly good if you have arthritis.  I think that the hip trouble affects my back and visa versa.  Plus it makes my feet and ankles hurt and makes walking really difficult.  The hip pain is burning and throbbing. 

The catch is that I can use the cane, but if the arthritis in my neck and myofascial pain in neck and shoulders is acting up, using the cane hurts my neck and shoulders.  It takes the pressure off the lower body, but makes the upper body hurt more. 

On a good note, I work at a very large university.  I have to park in the parking garage and walk 7 or 8 minutes to my office.  I think this has helped me because I have had fewer flares in the last three weeks.  I can still park closer and walk about 4 minutes to my office, but most days I choose to park further away to get the exercise.  My job is sedentary - I sit and do research and work on a computer almost all day.  So the walking really helps.

Sue, that pain the butt is what eventually brought me to my doctor.  I could not sit at all.  It feels like someone it jabbing an icepick into the "sits" bone area.  After a long car trip I actually got sick to my stomach because of the pain.  I had x rays and a MRI.  Results showed arthritis in my hips and lower spine with a bulging disc.  My primary sent me to a pain management Dr.  He felt the sharp pain was from very tight hamstrings (where they attached in the butt area).  He recommended p.t. but my insurance wouldn't pay for this.  I also do yoga almost everyday.  I started concentrating on slow stretches for the hamstrings and hips.  I also have problems with the band of muscles down the side of the thigh so I have stretches for this too.  I find that I feel pretty good when I keep up my walking/biking/or elleiptical workouts followed by 30 minutes or so of yoga. I am pretty flexible in the afternoon so this is when I workout.  I am too stiff in the mornings.  I hope you find relief because I know how this hurts.
