I went to extreme measures. I always loved Christmas, but then after the holidays were over I'd get that let-down depression. As all the kids in our family grew up and the older generation started being no longer with us and my husband developed diabetes, I simplified the holidays.
I cook traditional meals, but only the essential components - turkey, dressing, potatoes, veggies, gravy, cranberries. No sweet potatoes, rolls, relish trays, etc. I stopped making
cookies and candy because we don't need them anyway, and neither do our friends. I make donation to holiday charities instead of buying gifts. The only greeting cards I send are E-cards. We put up a Christmas tree and a wreath, and call the house decorated.
It was really hard the first couple of years, because I felt I "should" be doing all those things. (And shame on me for letting the "shoulds" get to me!) Then I discovered that not only did I not make myself physically sick, but my winter depression went away. For me, that was a fair trade.
Oh, and I also take naps about
twice a week.
