The new vitamin D levels I have been reading about call for 50 - 90.
It takes 100 units of D for each 1 ng you are low. That would mean to get to 50 you would have to take 2000 units a day - on top of what you are already taking in your vitamin, calcium, etc.
The toxic level for D is 10,000 units a day over a long time. So taking 2000 units should be pretty safe for just about anyone. I take 4000 units a day, on top of vitamin and calcium pills, or 2000 units if I go out gardening.
You can now get 2000 unit gelatin pills just about anywhere - for the same price as the old 400 units - and they're smaller!
