Unrelated - rapid heart rate?

Hey guys. I've had problems for awhile now with my heart rate being very high even when I'm not doing anything. For awhile I thought it was just from being out of shape but now I've started getting lightheaded even if I'm just sitting still. The internet has been unhelpful so I thought you guys might have some advice. As far as I can tell, it doesn't have anything to do with being on my medications.

As an example, this afternoon in class I checked my heart rate. I had been sitting down for about 30 minutes. It was 140 bpm. That does not strike me as being a good thing, but I'm not sure if I really need to go the doctor. I'm at college in Maryland and my doctors are home in NJ, so I'd have to go to University Health Services or the ER.

Oh, and I don't have high blood pressure. It's usually normal and is sometimes low, but I can't remember it ever being high.

Hi Sandi, that does seem really high for a resting heartbeat, that is more than double what mine usually is. It would be best if you talked to a dr. about it. Just to be on the safe side.

Hi Sandi,  I have had that problem too prior meds my pulse rate would never be below 120 if I remember correctly and then I had problems it shoots up. There is actually a name for it and there is a thread here regarding that.    I have had it since I can remember, my doctor (finally) said in time that can do damage to a heart and put me on a beta blocker, I pay $4 a month for that and take a low dose.  My blood pressure has always been good, a little on the low side now but that is due to the beta blocker.

Since been on that I haven't really had any problems, praise God.

Yes, I'd definitely get it checked out. I checked your previous post and noticed you're on Tramadol....that made me feel very speedy (can't remember if it actually raised my heartrate, but it bothered me enough to go off after a week or so.)

I do get Tachycardia occasionally, and my dr. never seems worried because it usually doesn't get above 120 - but otherwise, I'm on the slow side. Like you, it'll start out of the blue, sometimes when I sit up in bed in the morning. Wudda pain!

I've had the exact same thing for the past week or so. My usual resting heart rate is about 60 or 70 and this past week it was at 90 every day, and yesterday it went up to 100-105. Right now its around 95..definitely not normal for me. I'm not happy about it because I know it's unhealthy for my heart. I wonder if I have anemia - I will find out tomorrow when I get my blood test back. Back when I had anemia in my teens I used to have a rapid heart rate. Maybe get a blood test to rule that out?

I also have a higher pulse rate, even at rest.  You should go see a doctor and get a good work up.  It could be a number of things.  Have you ever had your thyroid checked?  Certain thyroid conditions can make your heart rate high.  I also read where someone else wrote that it could be a medication you're on.  Hope you get some relief, I know this can be an unsettling thing to deal with.

I ended up going to the ER. They did a ton of bloodwork, an EKG, and a chest x-ray, but they sent me home when everything was normal. The doctor said it was weird for someone so young to have such a high resting heart rate, but that they'd done all they could do. I should follow-up with my primary when I get a chance. My pulse had stabilized around 95 and they said I could leave.

I'm not sure whether they checked my thyroid but I did have it checked a few months ago and it was normal then.

I have hashimoto's thyroiditis and I have this also. You may want to get your thyroid checked. I can tell when my heart is beating fast because I feel funny in the face and lightheaded. I usually have to take a piece of Klonopin to calm it down. Mine has gotten up to 140 BPM and it is not fun. Hashimoto's can cause your thyroid to go up and down.

I think the most obvious is thyroid...I would have that checked out first...call and ask your doctors if you have had that test done recently.  My mom had Hashimoto's and she had a rapid heart beat constantly, and also lost a ton of weight before they figured it out.

This is something I live with all the time as does my 22 yr old son, the GPput it down to the fibro. I have had all the checks done even hooked up to a lot of different machines. My son was worried and the GP he was seeing never even put it down to fibro. For both of us we can be asleep ans wake up with our hearts racing. We have learnt to just sit back and do something to take our minds off it.
My mother who suffers from the same thing makes it worse and ends up in hospital, by becoming upset she makes it a lot worse and even go to the stage they gave her a pacemaker. Now that is a big problem as it causes more problems.
See your doc but don't panic.

I have been treated for a rapid heat beat for 11 years, long before I was diagnosed with Fibro. My doctor recently said that it could have been a very early symptom. I had several other symptoms during the last several years, but none of those symptoms showed up at the same time. I have been taking heart medicine since '99 and it really doesn't bother me now.

You should talk to your doctor about that.  Also, google the meds you are taking and see if a rapid heart rate is a side affect.  Hope you get some answers soon.

I used to wake up just like that. They said I was having panic attacks. One doctor said I could have sleep apnea but I never got it checked. You may want to consider that.
