I know I have been misdiagnosed when it comes to this.

Today I got one of the baddest diagnosis that I have ever heard of. My doctor, based on ONE neurology visit in which the neurologist only did another EMG and working from a 7 month old MRI of my lower back and a 6 month old CAT scan of my head, diagnosed me with Conversion Disorder. At this time I would like to say that none of my symptoms fit with this disorder and that no traumatic experience happened before the onset of my symptoms. I am going to schedule an appointment with another neurologist because was one not very nice and two horrible at his job when he only spends less then 5 minutes talking to you and finally because his and my doctors diagnosis is absolutely horrible.

For those that do not know Conversion Disorder is a mental disorder in which due to a traumatic event or stress your brain begins to imitate symptoms of a neurological disorder but only imitates certain symptoms. This almost always goes away within 4 weeks after a doctors visit. This disease is very rare in women and even rarer in men. So what are my chances of being diagnosed with not only Fibro but another illness that is rare in my sex? I would say very unlikely. My rheumotologist did every test except a lumbar puncture and a new MRI but at that time it was only a month old. So I know my Fibro diagnosis is legit. Seems to me like my doctor does not know how to make sure that all tests are up to date.

Adam, I'm so sorry for your frustration! I do think it would be in your best
interest to get another doctor's opinion and I'm glad that you will be seeing
another neurologist. When it comes to getting a diagnosis, not everything is
black and white...there are sometimes cases that don't "fit" the normal
guidelines. I've been in the rare exception category more than once. My
initial visit with my new neurologist lasted an hour. Hoping your new doctor
takes the time to answer all your questions and does a thourough job in his
examination.

Adam, that is very unfortunate. That is just another way of saying it is all in your head. I know conversion disorder is considered a real diagnosis. But it reminds me of Freud's histeria - pain is caused in different parts of a woman's body by the uturus, which is dissatisfied for some reason, and is wandering about the inside of the body causing problems.

I would definitely ask for a different opinion,

Yes I know. It is horrible. I know it is a real diagnosis but I was looking it up and almost every time someone was diagnosed with it, it was a misdiagnoses. It is rare even more rare then Fibro. And now that you mention it, it does remind me of Freud's Histeria as well.

Adam, I agree with your assessment, too.  It would be good to get a second opinion...if you really want one.  If your original doctor ran you though all of the tests and ruled out the other illnesses, then maybe what you need to do is accept the diagnosis and move forward. 

 

You really can have a good life in spite of fibro.  You just need to start the search to find what works for you to take the edge off the pain.  Trying to be pain-free will most likely keep you drugged up...at least that's how it is for me.  I just keep the pain under control and I've had this illness for so long that I'm kind of used to it now!  Oh, my!!!!

 

We are here to help you.  We have great ideas that help you work around fibro to do what you want to do.  Anything is possible if you have the hope and desire to do it!

 

By the way, I deleted the name of your doctor in your first post.  We don't like doctors' names on the forums because it could spell trouble for the forum...especially if you didn't give them a good review!  wink

I have accepted the Fibromyalgia diagnosis, but I do not believe that I have Conversion Disorder that was the one I was talking about. Sorry about the confusion.

I did not know about the doctor's name being a bad thing. Sorry about that.

I don't know anything about conversion disorder but wouldn't a psychiatrist be better able to diagnose something like that? From the little you said about it I'm surprised that most people with fibro haven't been mis-diagnosed with it. It does sound like the old stand-by doctors who don't believe in fibro say, "It's all in your head." Yeah, right. I hope you can get an accurate diagnosis very soon. That's a good starting point. maybe he felt the bill needed another diagnosis to satisfy the ins co?
I'm sorry it just sounds like bs to me with your history. And It certainly wasn't diagnosed with a lot of thought or time, or psych assessment.

maybe its good i avoid docs as much as I can: )
