Hi Georgia,
I have a nightly routine that helps a lot. Sometimes I have to add to it. My schedule is so off kilter because I am in graduate school, so sometimes I stay up until 3 am and get up early the next day and sometimes I can sleep in. A regular schedule of sleep and waking is really important, but not all of us can do that.
Every night I take one zanaflex and a benadryl, my statin and a oh what is it called . . . um . . . ah, calcium. The zanaflex helps me sleep without waking up feeling like I was in a wrestling match all night. Then I go to bed and read something quiet or do crossword puzzles. until I am very sleepy.
On particularly hard days, I listen to a meditation/relaxation exercise on an ipod. They are saved as individual files so when one is finished, it turns off. If you do not have relaxation exercises, progressive muscle relaxation is helpful. You can do that without a cd or music file. You can also download these relaxing sounds from the Internet. They have relaxing sound waves played over the top of ocean noises or crickets or something like that. (ok, I don't know if the sound waves really work or if it is psychosomatic, but the sound waves are relaxing to me.) Or you can just get the ocean noises and such without the waves.
I downloaded two onto my computer and ipod for $2 each. You can get longer ones, but I just play mine over and over. I do not own this stuff nor do I sell it or anything. I just think they are nice. Here is a link to the ones I got. Note - t ook off the link because after playing the sounds 13 times, the computer cannot find the files anymore.
Sue
