Amitriptyline Hydrochloride

My Dc. gave me amitriptyline hydrochloride to help me sleep.  It's not working. Does anybody eles take this med.

It didn't work very well for me for sleep either. Ambien works, or you can try melatonin - OTC. I read a study about taking magnesium and zinc with the melatonin. My rheumy said never to take Benadryl for sleep. I don't know why. He doesn't give scripts for sleep.

I've been given Lunesta, aka eszopiclone. It has been an absolute godsend.

Moonsinger, does it take a while to start working. He put me on 30mgs but I can't even feel it. I want to keep trying though. You say its the same as Lunesta?
When did the med. kick in???

Marilyn I have been taking 10 mg at night and my Dr asked me if I noticed a difference I had to say no then he said take 2 so 20 mg and the only difference is I'm even more tired during the day. I also take zopiclone and have taken it for almost 3 yrs and usually sleep. For me it takes about half an hour to kick in. I am finding now taking the 2 of them before I go to bed I tend to fall asleep on the couch and then wake up enough to stagger to bed.

aka elavil. Amitriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant, and I do believe it takes a while to get into your system, so don't give up on it yet. But do let the doctor know whether or not it is working at the time. A lot of people get help with it. Tt has been around a long time. Itt iis used for sleep as it iis somewwhat sedating. I myself don't like it. Itt iis suppose to help with pain too. But that probably takes awhie too. Most antidepressants take six to eight weeks to reach their full potential, so don't throw the towel in on this one either. But different meds workk for different people and there are a lot of other options. Keep your chin up.

Are we Fibro. people have reactions from med. more that reg. people. Karen that med. made me nausa when I went outside and got hot. Yuk I hate new
medicine. I live at a lake so I am outside all the time. So I know it was that med. we where talking about that made me feel sick. I can't take medicine like I used to. weird things happen lol

oh well, I will keep my chin up

I know, I don't want anymore changes in mine. I like things the way that they are.

I bet it is nice to live on the lake. One day maybe I will too. lol...

I've only used Melatonin and Restoril/temazepam. Melatonin works if I only need a little help sleeping and I don't use it too often - using it more than twice a week builds a tolerance in my body. The Restoril is great, it works like a charm but I still can't take it two nights in a row without risking that it won't work the second time.

My sleep problems are always getting to sleep and maintaining a sleep cycle. I use the meds to reset my system when I'm far off the cycle I need to be on. If you need them every night, things like melatonin and Resotoril might not be good for you especially if you build up a tolerance as quickly as I do.

Marilyn research the side effects I remember my pharmacist saying I would burn easier? I forget exactly but I am on a smaller dose than you.

The lunesta is an actual sleep med, whereas what you are taking has the ability to make you drowsy, I think... so not the same. But I just wanted to pipe in that the lunesta is really helping me. My problem has been staying asleep, not so much falling asleep, but it certainly helps with both.
