Hi Austen,
I found that percale sheets 'hurt' my ears and woke me when I could finally get to sleep. My DH had the same problem, so we decided to try flannel sheets. We now use nothing but flannel yr round. I always wash my sheets, blankets, quilts, etc, before I ever use them. I can't stand the smell of them right out of the package. To me it smells like 3 day old fish - yuck. I use softener on Everything I wash. Then I put unused tennis balls in the dryer w/ the bedding. It tends to beat them into softness. lol It also keeps my quilts from clumping. Just so I'm clear here, I wash my sheets, blankets, & quilts separately.
Each yr we treat ourselves to a cpl of new sets of flannel sheets. My children like the flannel, too.
Sleeping is hard enough w/o the sheets being a problem.
Hope you find sheets that work well for you.
Sweet dreams!!
God bless. Alice.
