Im looking for opinions/advice on what type of doctor to see. I have fibro, and Muscular Dystrophy. My question is that I wonder if it would make more sense to go to an Internal Medicine Dr or a Family Practice Dr.
I had been seeing an Internal Medicine dr, but have switched insurance companies. Ive always had Internal med. drs and wanted to know what was the difference in experiences for people or if you thought one was better than the other. I would think an internal medicine dr would be more knowledgable in the are of disease, but just wondered.

Hi Tracey,

I think neurologist would be a great choice because they specialise in diseases such as MD. A rheumy would be good to see for your fibro.

My rheumy oversees my healthcare and has referred me to many specialists. I now have a team...rheumy, neurologist, cardiologist, hematologist, pulmonologist, ENT and dermatologist. Having expertise is beneficial, and if you can get your docs to work together for you, it is an added plus.

Thanks. What I had before was a Neurologist, Cardiologist and Internal Medicine dr. Ive never been sent to a Rheumatologist. I guess I shouldve clarified for everyday health matters.
I will have to get all new docs now..ugh. theo ne good thing I see is that although he is not with the new clinic. The new clinic Neuros consult with the one I have had so I am sure that will help some.

My family doctor follows me for my fibro and he's awesome. He treats a lot of fibro patients and has done a lot of research into treating it. I would ask around for recommendations, though. Family docs are a lot cheaper than specialists, and with having two conditions the costs could climb really fast if your coverage isn't very good.

I would probably go to a neurologist. You want a Dr. that sees your diagnosis a lot and has had some new education updates on your diagnosis. These Dr's go to medical conventions and are usually up to date on the latest treatments. I would do my homework on MD also.
