Hello everyone i am new here just joined today ,i have a question about fibro is it possible to have a negative Ana test and still have fibro ?
Also is fibro considered an autoimmune disorder ?

Hi Anna Lynn, Welcome to the forum!

Fibro is not an autoimmune disease...it does share many of the symptoms of the connective tissue diseases that are autoimmune. Getting a diagnosis does take some time. Bloodwork is done to rule out autoimmune diseases.

If you check out fibro 101 near the top of the page you will find some great info including a list of fibro symptoms.

Have you seen a rheumy yet? Review the list of fibro symptoms and make your own list for the doc. It is always good to write down question and symptoms...it is so easy to forget while you are at you appointment.

Hi Robin,

Thank you for the quick reply . Yes i was diagnosed with fibro 4 years ago by a rhuematolgist and have been dealing with some other medical issues and recently the doc ran an Ana test to check for other autoimmune disorders mainly i think he was worried i may have lupus but the Ana came back negative which is good but recently i read an article that said Ana test can come back positive if you have fibro .

Boy, you've educated me today...I didn't know that an Ana test could come out positive with fibro. I actually learn something new all the time about this crazy disorder!

That fibro 101 thread that Robin directed you to really is a good one. Even if, as in your case, you already know you have fibro.

Hi, Anna, and welcome!  From what I have heard, the ANA test isn't all that accurate by itself.  It is used in combination with other tests to check for autoimmune illnesses like lupus, etc.  Your doctor was probably ruling out other illnesses that fibro can mimic.  It can be positive one time and negative another time.  Here is a link from the Mayo Clinic all about it.

Be sure to read Fibro 101...the second thread on the forum.  There are links to good info about fibro and you will learn a lot there.  Like Debbie, I learn new things about this illness all of the time!

Ana- welcome to the fibro forum. Sounds like you got your answer. Sounds like your Dr. was testing you for other things also. Fibro symptoms are so much alike with the auto immune diseases. I have had my ANA negative, but my Dr's seem to think I had lupus still. I went for second referral and I don't have lupus. I have 2 other auto immune problems. Sometimes my mind thinks that I might have something they are missing. It sometimes hard to wrap your mind around how could fibro cause so many weird symptoms. I have been through scans, X-rays, blood test, test, and many Dr's. I still come up with the diagnoses of fibro. I am finally trying to accept it and learn how to enjoy life with fibro.

Thank You and hugs to all of you for the Welcome , you all are very kind and helps me so very much to know i am not alone dealing with this fibro but wow all the pain weakness and headaches are so tough some days .Do any of you struggle with lots of migraine headaches ?
i have also read that magnesium and calcium are good for the headaches . Yes i did do some extra reading on the Ana test and read that they can come back negative and then later when another one is done come back positive does not seem like the accuracy of them are very good sometimes, i just cant believe fibro is causing all this and i just learned the other day that their are more then 60 Autoimmune conditions out their wow i didnt realize and the Ana from my reading i think only look for 4 specific ones lupus being one of them for sure. I am scheduled for an appointment at my new doc on 14th of June as the Ana test was done by a convienant care clinic doc and when they call with the test results even though they were negative they said it is very important i keep my appointment at new docter and follow up so please all keep me in your prayers that all will go well .

Anna, I goofed.  Fibro is considered an auto immune problem but it's not an inflammatory problem.  The old fog had settled in.  I did make a correction further up in this thread. 

 

But, you could have something else along with fibro going on.  I found that out myself a few months ago.  But it does sound like your doctor is thorough and it's ALWAYS important to keep your doctors' appointments. 

 

They will get to the bottom of this and you will get some help.  Let us know what you find out because we really do care about you.
