Hubby decided he wanted to throw an impromptu backyard croquet tournament, so he started inviting people over for tonight. He had already invited people before he mentioned it to me. I love parties, don't get me wrong but I'm flaring and it's 95 outside. I'm so swollen because the arthritis is flaring too, I'll be the goodyear blimp floating around the yard.

I've been known to throw parties on the spur of the moment...it motivates me to get the house somewhat in order turn ..but that's not when I'm flaring.

Well I'll have to practice what I preach and try to let the fun distract my pain...but my hubby can vacuum and clean. yeah

No fancy appetizers tonight...I'll give everyone a popsickle and a beer.

Deepwell, I,too, wish I could be one of those people that don't care if you have a house that looks like everything exploded in it. I, well, we are having my Mother & Sister in law over for dinner and I've worked myself into a frazzle about it. I've already worked 56 hours this week at work so I'm achy and crabby, they will get something easy and hubby will have to entertain...cause I'm going to lay around...

I go with the flow on all things. It is too hard to go against. I hope you have a nice party. I hope it cools down for you and that you enjoy it.

I survived the party...in fact, it was just what I needed...laughed almost the entire evening. We had 6 over for croquet...we have enough mallets for 12 to play but 8 last night was just enough.

My house was in order, it really never gets too bad...having 2 cats that shed, its mostly keeping up with vacuuming and dusting. Hubby vaccumed, I dusted.

Our friends showed up at 6:30 and left at 11:00. I keep my pantry stocked with things for unexpected stuff, variety of crackers, chips, nuts,ect...so throwing something together was easy...chips, salsa, cheese, crackers, cashews veggies and dip ... oh in my house there's always chocolate :)

I actually was the first king killer in croquet...not to shabby for someone who was gimping around. We played croquet until we couldn't see and came in and played cards.

It's funny, I was almost cursing hubby for throwing an impromptu party, but it actually helped me.

You know what's crazy? I suffered a lot more anxiety before all my conditions...now that I have some potentially life threatening stuff going on, I don't worry like I used to...I don't sweat the small stuff so much anymore and that is one huge blessing :) Yesterday morning, my concern was how I was going to in party mode with pain...distraction does work.

I wish I could have been there!  I love croquet.  My Dad had croquet set up, and badminton, too.  These stayed up all summer and he had spotlights on them so we could play a night, too.  Loved it!

 

Your party sounded like a lot of fun to me.  I'm so glad you enjoyed yourself.  Yes, do try things you don't think you can do.  We do amaze ourselves.

The last time I played croquet (YEARS ago) I whacked the ball and the head of the mallet flew off and hit my friend in the shin.  I guess was not born to have any kind of stick or bat in my hands.  Or broom...vacuum cleaner...mop....

We could have a fibromite croquet match...helmets, mouth guards and knee pads required!

That's great, Robin. I can just see you whacking those balls around, showin' 'em how it's done! I haven't played croquet since I was a kid, but I sure did love it.

Laughter really is the best medicine - that, and the company of good friends.

So glad to hear that you had a great time!

This is something I have realized awhile ago with living with chronic pain and health issues...you can either decide to curl up in bed and not do anything and all the health issues will still be there...

Or continue to live life and enjoy every single second you can with family, friends, laughter, sunshine, etc....and all the health issues will still be there.

In the beginning I kept putting my life on hold "until this test" or "until this surgery or medication".....

Yes...I still make sure I take good care of myself and put in "rest and recovery" time after a big day of activity.

Our life is now....it's happening every minute. The more joy I can grab during those moments...The more I can give to others...The more I can laugh till my belly hurts....The EASIER it is to deal with all the health stuff.

I think you did a great job of communicating to your husband about what you could handle preparation wise with food and household chores. And I'm so happy that you had fun with all of your friends and have gotten the message of "Don't sweat the small stuff":)

Thanks my friends...I'd love to play croquet with all of you...we'd have to have at least one "normal" play with us to remember whose turn it was. turn

I've never played croquet - I should give it a try!!! I love being outdoors (yes, even in florida). So glad your party turned out well, Robin.

Thank you so much! I was just sitting here wondering how in the world I am going to enjoy my life anymore (I love to walk and hike, and just came back from a painful 30 minute stroll through the neighborhood and I'm curled up under a blanket.) I will ask a friend or my family to come with me next time I take a walk, then even though it may hurt, I can enjoy the company! Really, this thread is just what I needed. I can do this. With God, family, friends and a kick - butt sense of humor smilewinkgrin
