Hypocondriac

I was having a real rough day this past Fri and gave a call to the nurse practioner with my nureo dr which she told me to call whenever i need to ask a question or if im having pain. Well i finally got a call back this evening with the nurse and i told her how i was feeling and all. well she was quickly to say this pain im having is from my lower back and not fibromyalgia. she said that fibro was just a made up word for people who are hypocondrac's. This made me so anger with this women! I told her I guess my neuro dr. and rheumy dr. have just been lieing to me...right? She really didnt know what to say other than ...well you have had back pain in the past and my mri shows this. But i know my own body and when i have pain in my back its a different pain that is sharp that runs down my legs. This pain...as i told her is a deep aching pain that feels like i have the flu all over my body!!

I just get so frustrated when you talk to someone that is so uncaring and wants to make you sound stupid!

I would write a letter to your dr. detailing that you called as he encouraged you to do. I would also note the time you called and when you finally got the return call. I would then detail the conversation to the dr. on how the nurse said that fibro is just another term for a hypochondriac.

That is really harsh of the nurse to speak with you in those terms. Ignorant people should not be on the phone returning the calls for the assist line.

Sorry for what you went through with that nurse. If the doctor is in agreement with her, maybe you should change doctors?

Have you tried chiropractic treatment with a chiropractor who is knowledgeable about fibro?

I am so sorry that you had this experience. Stress and anxiety an contribute to our pain, and these type of experiences actually contribute, especially when they are caused by those who are supposed to be helping us to get better. I agree about writing the letter, and I would also find out who owns the practice (if it is not your doctor), and send a copy of the letter to them. People like this should not be dealing with patients. Our family had a situation similar to this one in which I believe our doctor's nurse was actually influencing his decisions concerning the patients. She literally controlled him. I think that things that were said during phone calls with patients were slanted when she relayed the messages, as well as responses by the doctor when she called the patients back. I overheard a conversation between the two of them the day he diagnosed me, and it sounded almost as if he was trying to justify his making the diagnosis to her! Needless to say, we changed doctors shortly after this!

Oh dear! I'm so sorry that you were treated like that. There's no excuse for a so called medical professional to say such things to a patient. I agree with what the others have said. Document the name, day and time along with a quote of what she said to you in a letter to the doctor. I'd also cc a copy to the office manager so everyone "in charge" is aware of how rudely you were spoken to.

Def. agree with everyone, get it in writing, send it to everyone, if not for yourself than for the newly diagnosed fibro patient who is already feeling lost and alone. Its true most drs. have nothing to do with hiring and All of my drs., specialists, pmd's have MA's not nurse's, PA's, MA's and receptionists. Now I've had pretty much good experiences with PA's but those 6month MA school losers drive me up the frigging wall! They basically know nothing about anything but pretend like they do. Done ranting, been there, done that and obviously still have a sore nerve

I think I would have to come up with some way to insult the " nurse practitioner" label...lol...even something I didn't really believe, like -- "Oh well, you're only a nurse practitioner, that's just a glorified name for someone who couldn't become a MD."
