I had a radical mastectomy in April. I'm finished with chemo and feel great. I am considering reconstructive surgery. I met with a surgeon and she explained how the implants would be behind my chest muscles. I am of course worried about possible increased pain and implant leakage. If I don't have the surgery I can live with that but I think I would be happier if I had a somewhat normal looking body eventually.

Can any of you women tell me about your experience with implants? Thanks!

I have had mine since 2009, and only DX with fibro since March, but I don'tsee where my fibro is worse or more frequent than others. Seems like when and why my flairs occur it is the same as others. But if I felt like this before not sure I would have bothered :-) but my were not for the reason you are debating them, mine were purely for cute shirts reasons.

My mastectomies will be in Jan. I don't want implants, have other surgeries I need to do, like new knees! Good luck!!

But I saw a t shirt on Cafe Press I'm going get, says "heck yes they're fake! The real ones tried to kill me"!

Spookiesmom, good luck to you with your surgeries. I didn't think I wanted reconstruction at first. I had one breast removed and needed a bra for the remaining breast that kind of went "south". I have found the prosthesis to be hot and uncomfortable. I still may not get the reconstruction but if I do the remaining breast will get a lift.

I'm seeing my doctor Thursday. My knees are bad too and now going up steps is really painful. Hope it's something easy to fix for a while.

I have seen that T shirt too. Funny!

I had breast implants at age 19 in December 1999. Hands down, the best thing I've ever done for myself. I wasn't able to fill an A cup prior to having implants. I gained so much confidence and feel womanly. Mine have lasted all this time with zero problems. I nursed both my girls without a problem. :-)

Mine are Mentor brand round saline. Under the muscle. Incision was made at the breast fold (under boob)

No personal experience, but I have two close friends that had double mastectomies and reconstruction at the time of the mastectomies and they both were thrilled with the results. One woman was in her 30s and the other my age, well at the time we were in our 50s and she was thrilled that she had these "perky little boobs" and she never needed to wear a bra!

I think with any surgery or procedure the results depends on the person. Mine are going on 4 yrs with no issues.

Silicone was banned for a while, not sure if they changed it, but they are no longer banned. Anytime a foreign object or substance is implanted there is a chance the body will react to it.

What about the saline? They are safe aren't they?

I am not arguing I am sure there are cases of that, but there are also cases of many people who have has implants for a LOT of years with no issues. You are supposed to get a MRI every 5 yrs to make sure everything is ok. I also visit my Dr that did them once a year for a check up. I am sorry you and people you know have had such a bad expierence. Yes I know people with good and bad expierences, but again as with any type of procedure other is always good and bad stories.

Karen , they say saline is safe cause if they break, your body just absorbs it, and it is safe for your body too.

Honestly, I know nothing about implants. But what came to mind was that I had read about Mary McDonough ("Erin" on "The Waltons") having a bad experience and becoming an activist because of it:
