Tramadol-How much do you take at one time?

For those of you who take tramadol, how much do you take at one time?

My doctor prescribed Tramadol HCL 50 mg to take 1 tablet as needed every 6 hours as needed, but then she said I can take up to more if needed (at the time I didn't think to ask but how much is more? Didn't I read where you can take up to 300mgs a day?)

Monica, either call your doctor and ask or talk to your pharmacist.  They would have the correct answer for you and for the medicines you take.

Hi Monica!

I take Tramadol too.. 50 mgs (1) every 6 hours or as needed.  I talked to my dr. last week about just this subject.  He said I could take as many as 4x a day so, that would be 200mgs a day, at least for me.  I'm sure alot of it has to do with your size and weight. (I'm no lightweight, about 40 lbs overweight  eyes  )  If you're not 100% sure what's right for you.. call your Dr. - they'd rather you call and ask and take your meds properly than just guess.  And if you're in extreme pain, you should let them know that, too.

I think that you should ask your doctor about this or maybe the pharmacist.

I don't take tramadol, so I am not sure what the answer to your question. But I think your doctor would be the best person to ask. If it says one tab every six hours as needed, I wouldn't exceed that without talking to the doctor. You may need a medication adjustment if it isn't working. Or even a change of meds.

I hope that you feel better soon. Remember that we are here to help you as much as we can.

Hopefully soon somebody will come along with a better answer for you.

Monica - I am on tramadol, and you have read correctly: the maximum dose in a 24 hour period is 300 mg. I take 50 mg tabs, up to 6 a day. My "day" is not often 24 hours, but occasionally I'm up til 3 or so and if I'm in pain, I'll take one.

That being said, I agree with the others about checking with your doc. My rheumy was trying a new protocol for me with Neurontin and didn't want me taking extra tramadol until we had a chance to see what the neurontin did.

Thanks for the replies and concern with checking with my Doctor. My doctor said the same thing as Julie said not more than 6 a day. With my flares though, this does seem to be enought and when I take the percocet when this is in my system, it doesn't seem to be as effective pain relieve as when its not.

Tramadol is very addicting. Use it only when you really need it.
Also taking tyleol with tramadol (ultram) can make it work a little better. Again don't over do that either.
My daughter was taking Tramadol for about 8 years. As much as 6 a day...she eventaully neede to be detoxed/ Tramadol is an opiate.

the name for the medication that has both tramadol and tylenol is Ultacet
"DRUG CLASS AND MECHANISM: Ultracet is a combination of two drugs, tramadol (Ultram) and acetaminophen (Tylenol), that is used to relieve moderate, acute pain such as pain following dental or surgical procedures. Tramadol and acetaminophen each relieve pain, but they do so by different mechanisms. Tramadol achieves pain relief in two ways. It binds to the ยต-opioid receptor on nerves (the same mechanism that is responsible for the effectives of narcotics, such as morphine), and it also inhibits the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine by nerves. This inhibition may lead to reduced transmission of pain signals through the spinal cord to the brain. Acetaminophen achieves pain relief in the spinal cord and brain by increasing the threshold to pain, that is, by increasing the strength of the painful stimulus that is necessary in order to give rise to the sensation of pain. Tramadol is one of the drugs that causes serotonin syndrome, especially at high doses over long time or if taken with other drugs that also cause it. I get muscle twitches if I take more than 2 or 3 a day. That's the warning sign!

I agree that taking Tylenol with it helps potentiate the relief. I got into trouble though, with taking tramadol and Neurontin. I had muscle spasms starting in my thigh, running up into abdomen, then stopping diaphragm for a few seconds at a time.

Research "your drug and tramadol" to find out if there are any known interactions.

Tramadol may increase the level of liver enzymes and may decrease creatinine and hemoglobin levels due to Travmadol's potentially toxic effect on the liver. Monitoring of these levels should be done in patients who take Tramadol on a regular basis. Caution should be used in patients who are also prescribed a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) as Tramadol may increase the risk of serotonin syndrome.

Hi, I take tramadol and my script says 1 or 2 up to 4 times a day as needed.  My doc writes a 100ct script per month but my dog probably takes more than I do, for her it is a severe lack of hip sockets and at 8 years old she is getting a little gimpy.  For me to buy them at the vets it would cost me a fortune.

Should I be worried? My husband is taking 8, 50MG Tramadol HCL tablets twice a day?

As long as he is within the boundary of what his doctor prescribed he's fine. I have 50 mg tramadol that I can take 1 or 2 or up to 3 times a day. I don't feel I'm addicted or even dependent. I go months without taking one. I used my 6 today to take the edge off of some dental pain (broken tooth) and knee pain. I was given it mostly for my arthritis because I can't take nsaids.
As long as he is following the prescription he is ok. If he's using more then maybe he needs to let the doctor know that he is taking more and why. Is he addicted or is it just not enough to cover his pain.

Some forms of Tramadol include Tylenol as an ingredient (Ultracet) and that's when you have to be careful on how many you take in a day.  My dog was put on tramadol for severe arthritis and his liver shut down.  Unbelievably, my vet was not aware of the amount of Tylenol that's in the drug.

I take 100 mg in the morning. I am rated for 300 mg daily, but never take it past 5 pm. It gives me energy, and makes it difficult to wind down at theend of the day.

Be careful about Tramadol also because it will cause seizures if you take too much.

Definetly call the doctor. Also, this may just be me but when a medication goes horribly wrong for me I like to tell my story. Tramadol worked really well but my doctor increased my dose (can't remember the dosage) but the constipation was so bad I had to go to the hospital to get cleaned out. Look for signs of constipation. I was even taking large amounts of fiber and pills to help with a BM and nothing helped. Very scary,

i take 75mg tramadol hcl a day. its a 24 hour release. i use to be on the shorter acting one, but i switched to this so i wasn't self medicating so much. i notice you are on lyrica too....i find that helps me a lot. i would like to get off tramadol eventually, but compared to other drugs ive tried its good. this combination has worked the best. but of course everyone is different and i still struggle with side affects.

I can take two 50 mg tabs in the morning, but I cannot take any in the afternoon--or I cannot sleep. Restlessness, apnia, insomnia. Thus, I cannot imagine taking 6 throughout the day and being able to sleep.

I am also on Tramadol. I take 2- 50mg pills 3 times a day. As Alcie said, it can cause Seritonin Syndrome. I was taking Tramadol along with my anti-depressant and I had to stop taking the anti-depressant due to internal shakes and muscle twitches. Tramadol works really good for me. It helps my pain better than Lortab but everyone is different.
