I take 10/325 Percocet, 1 to 4 a day, depending on the severity of my pain. It does help. If I keep my activity low, I can get by on 1-2 a day. If I am under stress, or if I overdo, I will have to take 3, but rarely 4 a day. Four in one day would be after I had to cook holiday meals and having the entire family out with all the grandchildren. I don't have an addictive personality (except for chocolate!), so I take the least possible dose that helps me.
I had never taken Vicodin or Percocet until 2009 when I burned my arm in a spatter pattern (2nd degree). I didn't even want to take Vicodin because it always upset my stomach when I took it. However, the pain from the burn was intense, at an 8-9 level for at last 3 weeks. I started taking Vicodin, and I found it helped my overall pain, so my doctor kept prescribing it and I was able to get off Tramadol, which wasn't helping much. After I got used to taking the Vicodin, my stomach wasn't upset anymore. I also take gabapentin for nerve pain in my left leg.
I meant to add that only the person taking the medicine knows whether or not it helps. Just because a doctor reads a study doesn't mean anything.
Forgot to add that I have spinal stenosis, I get sciatica (both sides) very easily, DDD and facet arthropathy in my lower back, and a 1-inch fatty tumor on my sacrum. I have referred pain from my back to my left leg, and that is why I'm also on gabapentin.
