Hi everyone,
I've been wondering for a while if I should do a thread about this, since I've already mentioned some of it in other posts. But I think it could be quite interesting for everyone to share their different experiences related to this.
Some of the misconceptions about fibromyalgia that I've encountered are:
- Lazy and lying about being sick to get out of work
- Depressed, with physical manifestations of depression
- Hypochondriac - thinks every little symptom is a sign of some major illness
- Attention-seeking - wants sympathy from others for their pretend plight
- It's a result of negative thinking or pessimism
Some of my arguments against the above misconceptions:
If we're so lazy, then how come so many of us were such hard-working perfectionists before we became ill? And how come we often want to do things so badly that we strive to do things that we know are beyond our now limited capabilities and then crash in a heap?
If we're just depressed, then why do we get a whole range of symptoms that are not found in depression, such as a deficit in pain inhibition? And how come many of us are not clinically diagnosed with depression? I found a really good quote online:
"There is a major difference between spending every day wishing you could go to sleep and never wake up and wishing you could wake up one morning and do the things you so want to do but your body has betrayed you and won’t let you" do anymore.
If we were hypochondriacs, why would we believe that we have a non-life-threatening illness such as fibromyalgia?
If we wanted sympathy, we wouldn't choose to falsely claim that we have fibromyalgia because people are rarely sympathetic about it!
If it's a result of negative thinking, then how come when I tried positive thinking as a method to get better, it didn't work?

Anyway, my rant is over for now...
What misconceptions about fibromyalgia have you guys encountered?
