Ok so I got my denial letter for SSD after six months. I went to an attorney for a consult and he told me that I have to appeal the decision online (which I did this AM) and then when I get my second denial letter then I can retain him. Is this the way its usually done?

Also, I had two epidurals in the past and have noticed that I gained at least 10 lbs and am having a horrible time losing it. I have not changed the way I eat and I don't eat fast food and junk. Could it be the steroids from the epidurals?

Steroids will cause weight gain, yes.

So sorry about your denial - though as you know, it's very common.

As to the weight gain from epidurals, I can't remember whether I gained additional weight after mine - but I did gain about 10 lbs after a course of Prednisone last year. So it wouldn't surprise me. Bummer!

Did they at least help the pain? Mine really didn't.

Yes, steroids can do that. I was on prednisone for Crohn's and my hearing and I looked like the Pillsbury Doughboy. Also, I, too, AMF sorry about your denial.

My attorney accepted me after first denial and he did the appeal.

80% of applicants are denied on appeal. 50% on hearings....

I'm at the hearing stage.

Like Joy, my atty accepted me after my 1st denial. He filed the appeal. I was also denied for the appeal. I had to go to the hearing w/ the judge. My atty went to the hearing w/ me. I won at the hearing.

My sister was put on steroids yrs ago. She has always been very thin, she gained about 50 lbs in a very short period of time. After she went off the steroids, she lost the weight.

Thanks for the replies..no the epidurals did not help but I am upset because my pain mgmt DR did not tell me that they can cause weight gain!! and come to think of it neither did my primary..he keeps saying "Please try to lose some weight"..I am so disgusted.

I don't know if its just in NJ or if it depends on the attorney but He told me when I get my second denial letter then I can retain him. So I went online today and appealed it myself. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. He said that it takes another 6-8 months to get the second denial ltr. I asked him how do I pay my bills with no income until then? He just smiled and said "Good question."....lol

Linchu- I would check around on that attorney thing. I know most will accept you after one denial. If that is the case I wouldn't mess with the attorney your thinking about using. It would probably be in your best interest to use an attorney if you can on this second round.

I am not sure if epidurals make you gain weight. I know oral steriods make you gain weight. I know it's frustrating because I take meds that cause weight gain.

Sorry for your denial. Just keep fighting it if you think you can't work. It has improved my health since I get to stay home.

Hi, I'm back again lol  I'm also in NJ. I went to my atty after my 1st denial, and my DH also went to this same atty to apply.

My DH left work to go to the ER and was admitted. When he left the hosp, his work wanted him to be seen by their dr as to whether he could return to work or not. The dr said NO! I had a scheduled visit w/ my atty for my case and asked if he could file for my DH. He said Absolutely.

I personally wouldn't waste any more time w/ this atty, find someone who will help you. This one seems to want you to do ALL the work and then he will come in for his cut of your win. Don't like that attitude.

I just got the name of a new attorney. I am making an appt with him for next week. Wish me luck!
