So on top of having no energy i wake up at 4 or 5 am. I go to bed at eleven and wide awake by 5 at the latest this is not enough sleep for me. This has been going on for two weeks now and want it to end. I can't take any sleeping aids with my pills apparently. I need more sleep and want it. I wont nap during the day in hopes that I get a full nights sleep but this doesn't help. :( at a loss on what to try

Hi acupofme, can you take herbs or vitamins, minerals? I take Calm, it is a magnesium supplement, you can also get it with calcium in it. Just start out real small, like 1/8 tsp and work your way up slowly. This will help prevent you from getting diarrhea if you take too much too fast. I take it about an hour before bed. This helps me a lot. I am with you, just hate it when I can't sleep. I used to be a 9 hour person, now I am happy if I get 7 hours of sleep.

It sounds like a good suggestion from jkn913.  Puritan's Pride has something called "Calm Tabs."  I would guess they are somewhat similar, though I don't think they contain magnesium--just herbs. 

You could always check them out with your doctor in case of any med interaction, of course.

It's miserable when you can't sleep!  I hope things turn around for you soon. :-)

I do this also. Most nights I only get 3-5 hours sleep. Then, every once in a while, I actually sleep through the night, like I did last night.

I don't take sleeping pills either. Some do take melatonin but you should ask your doctor first. It is a supplement but you need to see if it will interact with your other medications. Your pharmacist could help you there, too.

I just make sure I have no caffeine after the middle of the afternoon. That includes chocolate and other foods that have caffeine. This will keep me awake.

I was having this same issue for several months. I drink a sleepy tea, take a melatonin and some Chinese herds. It has worked wonders for me. Definitely check with your doc first though.

If you have an autoimmune disease do not take melatonin. It can cause flares.

this is me also! i seem to sleep from about 10pm - 1 or 2 am and then either awake from then on or if i do go back to sleep then i am awake by 5 also...this has been happening to me for about 11 months now. the only thing that has consistently worked for me is melatonin (to get me off to sleep), even though I am in UK i get it from Puritans Pride, they do a good one called sleep something (cant remember name, which has melatonin, hops and other herbs) melatonin only helps you to fall asleep though and doesnt keep you asleep - so not sure this would be best for you...

Whadda pain. I hope you can break that cycle.

Was it here that someone posted an article recently about how people used to have what they called "first" and "second" sleep every night? I imagine that was because they had no electricity, so night was longer....anyway, they'd get up after a few hours, go about their business for awhile, then go back to sleep. Or maybe we're naturally hardwired for that.

Before I went on my sleep aids, I'd always wake up around 2 or 3, and not be able to go back until it was time to wake up.
