I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia 4 years ago. I ache all over but I can live with that pain. I have also had severe sharp pain in the center of my lower back that has been unrelenting for 4 years. It is a small area and I feel like I literally have a knife in my back 24/7. My original X-ray 4 years ago showed a cloudy area so my chiropractor referred me to an orthopedic surgeon. My MRI was normal with just a mildly protruding disc. I had another one last year which was the same except for showing some type of cyst which they said was benign and shouldn't cause pain. I've been to a chiropractor, orthopedic surgeon, physical therapy, rheumatologist and pain specialist and no one knows what is causing the pain. I'm on pain meds but it only helps me go from a 9 to 6 or 7 in pain. Without the pills I'm constantly at an 8-9. Any idea what could be wrong. I'm desperate.

I had constant, unrelenting pain and finally saw a board certified rheumatologist. After many x-rays, blood work and two MRI's I was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis and sacroiliitis. I was given ibuprofen and a muscle relaxer and these have made a significant difference in my pain.

I use Nurofen Plus. it is an Ibuprofen/Codeine blend that is not as stron as hydrocodone and actually works better for me than the hydrocodone/acetimetophen blend.

I also take a muscle relaxer every night as well as Hydrocodone. I've also tried Tylenol with codeine in the past but the codeine causes stomach upset. The hydrocodone doesn't bother me. I also have tried Advil and even prescription strength anti-inflammatories. I just wish they could figure out what is actually wrong. All of the doctors agree that they think there is more going on besides the fibromyalgia since the pain is unrelenting and in a specific spot. I hurt all over but some days my arms hurt, some days my legs hurt, etc. and some days are better than others. The back pain never goes away and is a very localized spot.

Hpymom,

Your description makes me think of the pain I had after I an epidural for labor. It started about 2 weeks later...doctors all assured me the only possible after-effect from the shot was a headache. I say that's a bunch of hooey!! The timing, and the area (exactly the same spot) was just too coincidental. It lasted for a couple of years, then slowly faded away.

As you said, other pain I could live with, but that, smack-dab in the middle of my spine, had me on my back on the floor in tears every night - tried ice and heat both, to no avail.

So even though I don't really have any suggestions, I sympathize. I hope you get some relief somehow!

Having fibro over 20 years it amazes me how the pain can just take over every inch of our body. I think Dr's are really not aware how much pain fibro can cause and how it effects each organ, joints and etc. therefore they have us doing numerious testing looking for a cause to our pain. After thousands of dollars spent we get no knew diagnoses to our symptoms.

I have back pain and sometimes I can feel swelling in the disc areas. It sometimes can keep me from doing certain activities. I am holding out and not doing MRI. I figure it's mostly fibro related like everything else.
I hope you can find some relief soon.
