back injections made me worse :(

I had my back injections yesterday morning and I'm worse than I was before. I now have pain in my left butt cheek and down my left leg. I missed work yesterday and today because of this and not sure what to do. I tried calling the doc and he told me to use ice.. I've been on ice for 2 days now. He told me yesterday the pain should be gone within a few hours..but its still here. I've been laying in bed because it hurts so bad to do anything else. I'm so tired of all this.

I'm sorry to hear this. When I had the pain in my hips lower back and legs I was given ibuprofen and a muscle relaxer called Robaxin and this did the trick for me. I don't have pain in that area anymore. I was amazed since I was walking with two canes just to try to get around. No canes anymore!

I've taken Tylenol, ibuprofen, norco, gabapentin and my muscle relaxer and still feel horrible..lol I was in tears a few hours ago.

It didn't happen overnight for me. I just took them as prescribed and slowly but surely I improved. I know you want this pain to disappear but it takes time and patience.

When I take ibuprofen I take 600 mg at a time and no more than four times a day. 400 mg doesn't help at all but 600 does. Be sure to eat a little something to help protect your stomach if you do take ibuprofen.

Try not to stress over this. That will increase your pain. Relax as much as you can and plan on tomorrow being a better day.

I try to stay away from ibuprofen as much as possible because after years that and other anti inflammatories, I ended up with 2 ulcers. I trip to the ER sounds great right now to end this pain but we all know how ERs are these days..lol I sure hope I do wake up with this gone.

That's the exact location of the pain that's my biggest problem, same side even....Sciatic nerve pain. I had 2 of those injections (which didn't help) and then surgery, almost 3 years ago, at L4-5. It became more and more bearable after that, but never went away completely, and lately it's been way worse again. I'm trying not to panic, because the surgeon told me I'd probably have more problems down the road....hoping it's just a temporary setback from being undermedicated.

Ice was my dearest friend for weeks back then - I really don't know how I'd have gotten by without it, and I'm a heat lover, someone who doesn't even like ice in my drinks in the summer! This is such a hot, burning pain.

I hope you can get some relief and some sleep tonight, and maybe your doctor can be reached tomorrow, or an on-call doc. Good luck.

I gave in and called the doc who did the injections. He recommended I go to the ER to get checked out so that's what I did this morning. The ER doctor was very knowledgeable about the type of shot I got and told me it could mess me up for weeks or maybe longer. He said sometimes they help, sometimes they make matters worse..like in my case. He gave me a couple shots (toradol and dilauid?) I feel pretty good right now but stomach is a little upset. I turned down his pain med script and told him I'd just stick with what I had..he thought that was a great idea, he said the shot of dilauid should get the pain down to where my norco will manage it..he said to stay on top of taking them and take an extra if needed..told me to take even if I thought I didn't need because once pain gets high its hard to bring back down.

I so glad you are feeling better. That ER doctor gave you some good advice. Don't wait until you are in a lot of pain to take the pain medications. I used to take pain meds at a scheduled time and that keeps your pain under control. Now, since I don't seem to need as much pain medication, I wait until the first signs that my controlled pain is rising. Then I take the medication. Do not wait until you are in misery because just as that doctor told you, it's hard to bring down a lot of pain.

I commend you for not accepting more pain medication. That's wonderful. Your Norco hopefully will do the trick. I know you will get this all worked out because you are trying so hard to do the right things. You've been given a lot of good information on this forum, too, that can help you. The ultimate decisions as to how you will handle the pain is yours and I hope you will get in control of your pain very, very soon.

With fibro our bodies over react to so much...sounds like yours is having a hissy fit...glad you went to the ER and they were able to help you.. Thank goodness.. I had an injection in the thorazic spine years ago... It did help but very temporary .

Sure hope tomorrow is a better day!

I'm another one the shots did NOT help. After the second one I didn't go back for more. I didn't feel they gave me enough benefit to be worth all the pain and agony afterwards. I'm now on Fentanyl Patches and take oxy for any breakthrough back or fibro pain.
I'd had surgery appx a year before the shots and now I swear no one is going to ever touch my back again unless I'm to the point I can't walk. I'm too nervous about what could happen.

Frenchiesue, I'm still hurting from the shots. Its been almost a week and my back is still mad. I had a follow up appt with them today and now they want to do Radiofrequency injections to kill the nerves down there. I'm not sure I'm going to let them. I am very jealous that your on actual pain medication, I can't get them to budge on my norco.. I want to try something else!
